If you love sausages, hot dogs, and brats, you might be in for a shorter life, a new study suggests.
The study analyzed data from half a million men and women, as a part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. It was published in the journal BMC Medicine [PDF]. They found a link between "processed" meat which includes all meat products, including ham, bacon, sausages; small part of minced meat that has been bought as a ready-to-eat product and cardiovascular disease and cancer, they report.
Also, they found that the more processed meat you eat the more likely you are to die early (of anything). A previous study of just red meat came to a similar conclusion.
The researchers think the increased cancer risk could be due to the presence of preservatives like the salt, smoke and nitrate. Also, the high levels of fat in these meats. "Risks of dying earlier from cancer and cardiovascular disease also increased with the amount of processed meat eaten," study researcher Sabine Rohrmann, from the University of Zurich, said in a statement [PDF].
"Overall, we estimate that 3 percent of premature deaths each year could be prevented if people ate less than 20g processed meat per day."

I’m ok with this. Leave me alone...
Besides, a percentage within the margin of error coming from a Socialist-leaning “health” organization does not sway my mind one iota...
Ooh here we go, more stuff for Despot Bloomberg of New York city to ban despite the fact that if you eat ANYTHING in abundance it can harm your health, even drinking an excess amount of water can kill you...

But of course the government must regulate regulate regulate because they know more that we do. Everybody is a child to the government.
"...but, BUT, if you eat veggie bacon you can live to be 218"
I grew up in a kielbasa family. Kielbasa was the meat of choice. My dad would travel miles and miles to find “the best” kielbasa. He had six brothers and several of them made their own kielbasa. There is still talk that one of them made kielbasa from a groundhog. They ate it every which way. Boiled, broiled, fried, grilled, on sandwiches, mixed with kraut and noodles, you name it. Anyway, you get the idea. And guess what? Five of the seven boys died of colon cancer or stomach cancer. Bad way to die, by the way...
Anyway, as I sit here in the kitchen typing, there is a plate of Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage sitting on the counter top about six feet from me. It is calling me. And I will eat it as soon as I hit the “post” button. I am hopeless.
They’re right, everyone who has ever eaten meat, had already died or will die.
Oh and GREEN TEA with honey (important for your lungs) instead of coffee anymore
I used to cook what I called “Smoke alarm pork chops”. I would cook them 10 min on one side in the broiler - turn them over then wait until the smoke alarm went off (it was sensitive) they came out PERFECT! My dad said I was the only chef he knew who used the smoke alarm as a dinner bell! Everyone knew the pork-chops were ready!!!
With a bit of steamed spinach and apple sauce...... yum!
Well, only one of them is dead, and that was because of drugs.
On the bright side. If anyone pays attention to this study, maybe bacon will drop from $5.00 per pound to $2.00 per pound.
Will the Obamacare questionnaire your doctor gives you start asking about sausage and bacon consumption? NO HEALTH CARE FOR YOU! You.. you.. BACON EATER!
My Grandmother, bless her heart, lived to be 98 years old. She ate heavy amounts of bacon, fried eggs etc. In general terms I think it is genetics that determines long life, not what one eats.
Holy crap.
We wuz going to the Boy Scouts Pancake breakfast saturday.
Obama is right.
The government should sue the Boy Scouts as food terrorists.
“No, no - that makes too much sense - watching TV KILLS! Must be the cathode rays!!!! /s”
Yep.
Watching CNN & MSNBC kills.
If Hot Dogs are so bad, then how did Ben Matlock last so long?
The bacon has left the plate.
I remember when I was a kid we butchered a hog. My grandma rendered the fat for lard. The pieces of fat leftover were good eats.
I just had three slices of premature death with an egg, and some home fries.
My grand dad ate bacon, and pork fat sandwiches and died when he fell out of bed when he was 90 years old.
Bacon grease: The fountain of youth?

Good. Let the control freaks espouse force feeding it, especially to Muslims, as a way of reducing a population intent on destroying the planet through global warming.
We did too. Everything was fried in bacon fat in our house. My Dad died at 72, but it wasn't because he ate bacon. He died of lung cancer.
