Defense of your home and family.

Self Defense Inside the Home: Avoiding over-penetration - Wednesday, February 27, 2013 9:53:15 AM · 17 of 29 jongaltsr to EXCH54FE

I learned to pay attention to shadows.

To differentiate between clouds moving overhead, Trees blowing in the wind and such.

I learned to differentiate between reflections passing my window by listening to hear if at the same time a car passed by or if the reflection was my dog by listening for his nails on the sidewalk.

That is something you pick up in battle.

That is something you pick up when you want to survive another day.

Yes, it is a bit paranoid but you have to be so if you want to survive in the VERY near future.

PAY ATTENTION to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING going on around you if you plan on surviving.

KNOW WHERE your weapons are at all times.

Anticipate which doors and enemy is most likely to barge through and if you can shoot through that door or wall and not hit a stud and deflect your bullet.

Think about it. Anticipate. Be creative in your mind.

Know whether you are going to stand behind a brick wall and shoot around the corner or if you are going to lay as flat as you can on the floor and let the bullets fly over your head.

Live to fight and protect yourself and your loved ones.

Get them thinking in this method also.

Hiding in the closet does nothing. Bullets can pass through many walls and if trapped in a small room with no exit your have no alternatives - and you will die.

Beg to differ. If you are armed. There was a recent case here in Georgia where an Amish man broke into a house in a secluded neighborhood. He was armed with a crowbar - the mother ran upstairs and hid with the children in an attic closet. Accounts you hear say that the perpetrator only had robbery on his mind, yet he followed the young mother upstairs with her children.... to do what? RAPE - that's what. Only, she had her phone and a 38 revolver with her. She got him 5 times. The lucky would-be rapist lived, but he was over and done when she popped him...inside the closet.

But, but a popular home safety book from 45 years ago said your should go into a “safe room”, break apart a pair of scissors and tape the blade to a broomstick!

She had no alternative as she was trapped in a small enclosure.

NEVER (if you can help it) trap yourself thus because the bad guy may just have a gun (YOU DON’T KNOW FOR SURE) and could just pump shots into that closet and there is no where to hide.

Last resort choice ONLY.

This story I related really hit home with my daughter. A good looking young mother with three girls home alone a lot because her husband travels to keep his family fed and housed without Government assistance.

This slug intended to rape that woman. He had free, guick reign of that house with little chance of cops getting there before he left with whatever he could score...he didn't want that; he wanted to rape the woman plain and simple.

My daughter agrees and she really gets concerned at nights, even with a Doberman Pinscher to alert her. I had her take a handgun defense/safety course along with my wife...4 hours classroom and 4 hours range. Each had a 357 Magnum S&W 686 I gave them. Both did extremely well in shooting.

Yesterday (I take my daughter every Lady's Day Tuesday) at the range, she was shooting deadeye and I kept pushing the target back 5 feet at a time without her seeing (reloading).....she ended up putting 18 rounds on target at 50 ft. with the 686, half on the red and the other half inside the 9 ring, all with 357 mags.

I'm certain if she sees a perp and starts shooting, the bastard won't end up leaving the hospital months later for jail...he'll be in a body bag with a couple of head/heart shots.

Pray tell me. Where are you supposed to run to upstairs with three children in tow?

I just read your other thread as well — shooting through concealment at an unseen enemy.

I think your advice on both threads is great for combat, but poor to useless for home defense.

It seems you are bringing a house-clearing combat mentality to home defense.

Many of us were not soldiers. Many of us don’t have the training. Or we are older without the reflex and eyesight and hearing of youth.

Many of us will be affected severely by stress in home defense. A combat veteran will likely channel that stress into performance and stay relatively calm in a shoot/no shoot life threatening situation.

The mass of people who would ever need to defend their home from a burglar are going to have our hands full just trying to stay calm and deal with the new experience of being threatened by someone in our homes in the dead of night after being disturbed from a peaceful slumber.

Your advice seems better suited for a SHTF prepper rioting/home invasion scenario, but that likelihood is nearly zero today.

Thanks for the effort but I can’t apply your advice. I am just trying to stay put and defend my corner of the house while I call 911 and gear up to shoot an assailant if he is dumb enough to approach. I don’t want to clear the house. I don’t want to charge the perp. I don’t want to spray and pray hoping I hit the guy.

I just want him out of the house, either because he gave up from knowing I was a hard target, or because the cops arrived, or because he approached and forced me to shoot him.

I don’t know how to apply your advice to a burglar in my home.

Good shooting, where did you find any ammo?

What your are doing at home IS home defense. It is ALSO house-clearing combat.

If you don’t think out the situation in advance (example - where would I hide to protect myself best from intruders) then when the situation actually occurs -YOU ARE NOT PREPARED AND YOU WILL MOST LIKELY DIE.

If of the other hand you have given it thought you will react quicker and know exactly where you can defend yourself and your family best.

Do nothing = die

Think and plan = much better chance to come through the experience alive and well.

Untrained by the military does not matter. Prethought and planning will give you the edge to survive.

Stress is a response to being ignorant of alternatives.

Plan alternatives and Stress virtually disappears.

The brain is a powerful tool IF YOU USE IT.

IF you do not use it you will die and therefor survival of the fittest rule applies and you die.

Overreaction is a problem with rookies. Know what you are shooting at and don’t shoot at shadows or sounds. They could be your family.

Call out first and be prone on the floor. If it is your wife or kids they will answer. It it isn’t a couple of bullets will pass over your head because the perps will be aiming whey they think you will be standing. YOU WILL NOT BE STANDING.......

If you have prepared in your mind what to do you will do it. If you do not prepare your mind you are better off dead.

Use your brain and survive. Don’t and you won’t.

Don’t put it off. Do it now. Do it before you go to sleep, when you are taking a shower, sitting on the pot, cooking a meal, mowing the yard, etc..

Once you have thought it through a couple of times your brain actively thinks of alternatives - often better alternatives than you originally planned.

Let your innate brain creativity do its job.

IT IS NOT ZERO LIKELYHOOD TODAY> IT JUST HASN’T HAPPENED TO YOU SO FAR.

DON’T WAIT UNTIL IT HAPPENS TO YOU AND THEN YOU THINK - “IF ONLY I HAD LISTENED TO THAT GUY”

BANG - you are dead because you did not prepare.

IF you can not apply my advise then you are better of dead right now. Go into your room of choice and shoot yourself and your family and get it over with.

If you call 911, the police will come and take pictures of your dead bodies and then try to figure out who shot you.

YOU ARE STILL DEAD> 911 will not save you.

If you spray it is because you do now know what your are doing. You never prepared so you shoot anything that moves including your family.

If you know what you are doing you will know where your family is, that they are equally prepared to keep low or in some specific location so that you only have to shoot at the perp.

The perp will leave the house (AFTER YOU ARE DEAD) - no worries. Cops show up after an incident not during an incident.

YOU have been watching to many TV movies. THAT IS NOT REALITY.

I can see that talking to you is actually a total waste of time. You are predestined dead meat. I only hope that others who read this get something from it. THAT is who I am actually writing this response.

If you don't know how to clear your own house then you are not prepared to defend it.
