The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

I've done the vodka injection thing with watermelons, but the kids were young and I stopped that after they swiped a watermelon from the fridge and wound up indisposed. I don't have to worry about that today. ;)

I’ve heard of people grafting tomatoes onto other members of the nightshade family, particularly ones that were growing as weeds already. On the one hand, it’s a great way to make your weeds work for you. On the other hand, you’d have to be careful just which nightshade you were grafting onto. There was a case I read where they had used jimsonweed as the rootstock. It grew tomato vines that were bushy, vigorous, extremely productive. . . and highly poisonous. Landed the entire family in the hospital.
Try chilies from Diaz Farms in Deming,NM. They have different levels of hot, and anything they say is xtra hot or more is plenty hot enough (or too hot) for anyone. They have green chilies that are hotter than most jalapenos. Their red chile powder is the best ever to cook with, and it comes in different heat levels as well.

I don't know how much you want to plant. There is an alternative to working in a garden. you can plant some of your stuff in double 5 gallon buckets. Tomatoes do great,sometimes better than planting them in the ground. I have grown broccoli and Romaine lettuce in double buckets.

They have a section of their forum devoted to this method. I never would have thought of it, except that you posted a link to the idea a few weeks back, and I googled it some more. Thanks! If it works at all, I'm going to love it, and if it works the way they say, I'll be ecstatic!

I have only started one container, and I forgot to poke drainage holes in the bottom, duh. I'll try to remember to get a picture of it tomorrow.
Anything needing tropical environment has to make do indoors in Missouri. This kinda limits my selections, since I don’t have a green house.
I grow some spinach, lettuce, herbs, peppers, tomatoes, and lemons, which pretty much is all the space I have in front of the patio door.
I’s like to have a 10-11 ft x 12 -14 ft green house/garden room attached to the house so that I can just walk into it without going outdoors. Maybe even have a small table and chairs for sipping tea or coffee and snacks, with any easy chair for reading and drooling over seed catalogs.LOL.

My pet peeve with gardening supplies is that so many of the bags are too heavy for me to manage, and I hate asking Hubby to unload them for me.

I assume you have read what I have written on this thread so you know I've made every effort in my life not to grow stuff - my thumb was black, not green.
One time I tried to grow something, I remember, it was a plant I brought from Hawaii, and my husband, who could grow anything, said I needed to “talk” to the plant. So, I went over to the plant and said, “Either you grow or I'm jerking you out of this dirt!” My husband said that was not the right thing to say to the plant.
Now, since that beloved husband is gone, either I figure out how to grow or I grow NO food and I surely do like tomatoes and onions and lettuce. AND TOBACCO.
Now, that you realize I don't know jack about growing, what do you mean when you say “DOUBLE BUCKETS?” Just one inside the other? Please explain. Thanks.
HAR! When daughter and I went to Lowes(tm) yesterday, I got the big bag of peat moss. ARgh. The big bag of potting soil... ARGH!!! and the big bag of commercial fertilizer. argh.
She only laughed once at me when I heaved on the potting soil bag for the third time and it didn't really move.
Loading them into the car out of the shopping cart, I struggled with the bulky and heavy peat moss. She asked "Is it heavy?".
I just said it was just like dancing with her mother. Pbbbtttttt!
That stuff is heavy. And while I'm still hale and hearty, I'm not a great big weight lifter guy. And the small bags of stuff have too large a mark up.

Here’s link. If you google global buckets you will get lots of different sites that talk about the method. It uses two buckets to set up a self-watering system.
Well, at one time I was doing a little workout with dumbbells. I did get strong enough to lift the saddle over my head to put on my horse.
This also allowed me to drag the bags out of the trunk into the wheelbarrow and push them to the garden site and turn over the wheelbarrow to dump them out.
Then the horse stumbled and fell and I broke a little bone in my elbow and wrist, and injured the elbow on the other arm. Now, I am weaker than ever, in spite of physical therapy.
Gonna have to start all over. I can’t stand to spend the money on bags the size that I can handle.
