Rifles Your needs: Hunting, varmint control, just in case
Why: While some people may use or need a rifle for home defense, all the rifle owners I know use their rifles for either target shooting or hunting and varmint control. They use a different kind of gun for personal or home defense. However, for the sake of argument lets say that the proverbial excrement has hit the rotating airfoil and that you, despite the fact that you get your meat from the grocery store and dont run into coyotes at the bus stop, could be called upon to defend all that is categorically good from all that is categorically bad. In light of this potential situation, you should gravely proclaim to whoever is in charge of your bank account that it is morally incumbent upon you to own a rifle . . . just in case.
While semi-automatics are incredibly popular and effective, a good bolt-action rifle is the most rugged, durable, economical, and time-tested rifle platform available. Remember: this article is for the average person who does not need something like a battle rifle. That being said, my recommendation for a cheap, reliable bolt-action rifle is, in fact, a battle rifle. Oops.
Recommended: Mosin-Nagant 1891/30. Cost: $100

Covered before, but may be of interest to your list.
Stuff has gotten stupid out there on prices.

I saw a Russkie 1950 SKS on consignment for at a local gun shop for $999. If it sells I may have to put mine up, but I like it too much!
AR’s, Glocks, etc are fine weapons and I own them, but I’ve also considered a 357 levergun and corresponding revolver for SHTF duty.
Stuff has gotten stupid out there on prices.
Between no ammo on Walmart's shelves, to $2,200 for an AR platform, gold ain't got nothing on these.

I lean toward having a carbine in a pistol caliber and the matching caliber pistol. No fumbling around for ammo. On the other hand, I have about 7 different calibers running around the mansion.
That kind of return on the dollar would tempt me. But I think I'll keep mine. They are good for feral hogs after I modifed the back sight to a peep sight instead of the notch sight.

The guys behind the counter said it wouldn’t sell at that price, but who knows, now a days.
Like I didn’t have enough toys I bought an Enfield #4 mk1 last weekend at a gunshow , having a hard time finding 303 ammo for it , only 80 rounds out of three shops I’ve been to and 40 of these I bought at the show.
Today’s price for a Ruger 22LR is $260-290. I have priced them from every gun company on the internet I could find, for the past several months.
Stories like this make me glad that I bought a bunch of stuff back when I had folding cash to blow.

Pistol-caliber lever-guns are quite useful. Usually hold more than 10 rounds and, with practice, are quite fast.
Miroku/Winchester model 92 or Marlin “cowboy” can be had in common pistol calibers. May or may not adapt to .38/357 length differences, though.
Mine are .45LC to match my Ruger Vaquero revolvers.
I like my AK (Romanian WASR-10) that I got recently for $450, and have been fitting it out. I would gobble up an SKS in a minute if I find one at any kind of a reasonable price...I like the idea of being able to shoot w/o having to have mags handy.
Also, high count magazines can't be found. I got a 25 magazine for a Ruger 22LR before they were gone, and I'm thinking of putting it on the wall as an antique even though I just bought it about two months ago.
The price tax and all was $244 and they had 4 30-round mags.,,, just couldn't help myself had to have it all.
“...high count magazines can’t be found.”
You just have to keep looking. I got a package yesterday that had 5-30rd 7.62x39 in for my WASR-10. Needless to say, the price on mags has gone up 3 or 4 times in the past 2 months.
I laid in several BX-25’s for my 10/22 a year ago. Sweet mags.
I love the SKS for feral pigs. One shot every few hours, careful reloading. Push down a stripper clip? I've never done it without shedding a little bit of blood and bark off the knuckle.

Every gun out there will kill as that is why they were made.
