$100 is a little low for the Mosin these days, but still under $150 for a solid shooter. A good list, still pricy if you bought 'em all.

Covered before, but may be of interest to your list.

I could sell my old Ivers-Johnson 9 shot .22 revolver with the loose barrel for $100US today.
Stuff has gotten stupid out there on prices.

AR’s, Glocks, etc are fine weapons and I own them, but I’ve also considered a 357 levergun and corresponding revolver for SHTF duty.

Today’s price for a Ruger 22LR is $260-290. I have priced them from every gun company on the internet I could find, for the past several months.

I should have added one can't find a Ruger 22LR for sale, neither is there hollow point ammo for sale in any caliber.
Also, high count magazines can't be found. I got a 25 magazine for a Ruger 22LR before they were gone, and I'm thinking of putting it on the wall as an antique even though I just bought it about two months ago.

The Mosin sounds good in theory, but there are issues to consider. I gunsmith for a living and can tell you that commonly replaced parts on the Mosin are in fairly short supply when compared to a lot of bolt rifles. Another issue is that there is not a lot of brass cased ammo out there. You will be hard pressed to find cases to reload in a SHTF scenario.

Preppers' PING!!
The prices listed in the article I believe are low. I also belive that it may even already be to late for many to purchase weapons and ammunition even if many of the gun bans and rescritive policies are not inacted. It is my opinion that we are we are on the cusp of SHTF.

Well I just about disagreed with that whole article and it starts with affordable and he left out versatility. When it comes to a good reliable firearm I’m not pinching pennies thats always a mistake but I understand we don’t want to break the bank.
Reliable:
While there are several good semiautos out there and I own and have owned many, their off the list.
Available: The 7.62x54 is off the list, while still a good round it’s a fossil, theres a better choice.
22 Rifle- There are several good bolt action rifles in this caliber, mine would be a RugerModel 77/22. You can feed a variety of ammo through a bolt action from shorts to birdshot.
12ga shotgun- Ithaca Model 37. Smoothest most reliable action on the market and comfortable to shoot by both right and left hand shooters. (bottom eject)
Center fire rifle- Ruger Model 77 (prefer the tang safety) in 7.62x51. Wide variety of ammo available for this round.
Center fire. While I love a good double action revolver I would probably stick with a single action here and the ruger Blackhawk convertable in 357 Magnum/9mm would be my choice. 9mm, 38 Special and 357 Magnum.
Reliablity, availability and versatility have pretty well been coverd here. and we still didn’t break the bank.

I’m thinking I should just make some of my own arms. It would be a great exercise and help me to own not only the process but give a sense that it is priceless, for the work I did creating it.

I had a Mosin on Reserve at Buds, but when I talked to someone there, he said they didn’t know if they would get anymore in. The rifles were in a barrel by the door and everyone who came in for an AR and couldn’t find one was grabbing 2-3 on their way out of the store. I also couldn’t find a 10-22 or a Henry, but I did find a 702 Plinker. Not a bad little gun and has a free floating barrel. Only problem is I paid $90 for two mags last week. :(

Well you get what you pay for. Except for the 10-22 and the Bersa count me out. Instead of a Mosin Nagant I’d rather have an American Ruger in .308 for about $350. It has a 4 round rotary mag and one in the tube. Its a very very good gun for the price. It will shoot a 2 inch MOE at 300 meters out of the box. If you start tweaking it it will get more accurate than that.

For a lot of rifle and ammunition at an affordable price consider the M1 Garand.
CMP still offers Field Grade M1 Garands for $525.
This is a very good price - check the auction sites. They are selling for double that price.
HERE: http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/m1garand.htm
And they still have 30-06 ammo for it at $98 for 200 rounds packed in a real steel ammo box.
That's under 50 cents a round.
If you have been watching ammo prices you will know that this is an exceptionally good price.
HERE: http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/ammo.htm#Greek3006
Garand Clips are available at CMP at $20 for 25 clips (reuseable).
HERE: http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/accessories.htm#clips
All of this is Military Surplus of course.
Parts and accessories are plentiful and widely available at reasonable prices
For those not familiar with the Garand, I can tell you this is all the rifle you could ever want when the zombies visit your neighborhood.
It is a semi-automatic, 30-06 caliber, holds an 8 round clip, reloads quickly and easily, has an effective range of over 1,000 yards.
If you can see it with the naked eye, you can hit it witrh an M1.
The Garand was THE US battle rifle that put the US on top in WWII. This is back when every infantry man was expected to be a marksman and make every shot count - before the "spray and pray" philosophy took hold.
