(Vanity) Need help with overwhelming JUNK phone calls on land line.

I need to keep my land line, but I'm about ready to turn the ringer off which means real calls won't get my attention. This all really started at the change of the year, and may have something to do with the small political donations. Maybe. I don't know. But it starts in the morning and ends in the early evening. One is particular is GE Capital and I do absolutely no business with them.

I went throught the "don't call" years ago.

Anyone else experiencing this?

"I don't like being rude but honestly, you end up being rude....."

Someone interrupts YOUR life by calling YOUR phone, on YOUR line, in YOUR home, on YOUR time, to do THEIR business and YOU are worried about being rude?!?!?!

Do not call list is as effective
as the do not rob list for banks.

Cancel the land line. Get an iPhone ,
Jailbreak it, then install iblacklist.

I’m stuck using iPhone until some one comes up with a comparable app for android.

If you can find an old fax machine record a tone sequence onto your phone and play it back to your answering machine message.

Get an answering machine. Solicitors generally won’t leave a message. Turn off your ringer. Check your answering machine according to the importance you place on phone calls. I generally just erase them every few months so the memory full light goes off.

When I had the landline, I also had an answering machine. I told any friends/relatives that, if they called, to say something when it answered, because I would not pick up otherwise.

I used the answering machine as a filter. It worked pretty well.

My worst offender was MY telephone company. During a 4-day period, I got 4 sales calls from them. One caller even called twice, because I recognized his voice. I called the Customer Service number and chewed them out. I told the agent I was on DO NOT CALL — and that meant THE PHONE COMPANY too. She removed me from the ‘active’ list.

I now use a pre-paid cell phone exclusively. I occasionally get a sales call or text ad. Frequently, if I do not recognize the number or area code, I select IGNORE.

We had two persistent callers that we had no clue what business they were with. I made a note of the numbers and started answering in German. That ended the calls after the second episode.

I want to keep my land line as well so I solved the problem by cancelling all features on the land line except call forwarding - all calls are forwarded to my cell phone. I always have my cell with me and if I don't recognize the caller's number on its caller ID, the call goes to voice mail. I then look the number up on the internet and if it's a telemarketer, I enter the number into a contact in my cell phone called "spam", which has no ring. If that number calls again, I don't hear it. Problem solved.

Press # once, then immediately press # again and HOLD. The caller will receive a loud ringing in their ear, and if it is a Robo call will be broken at once.

Just keep it up until they give up.

My wife updates our “do not call” list at least every other month — when we start getting calls again.

She also tells them that we live in a “Do Not Call State” and requests that we be removed from call lists. Since you can put as many as 3 numbers on the do not call request each time, she also puts our cell numbers on it.

The telemarketing calls stop immediately. I think the web site is

donotcall.gov

Even though the web site says this is a permanent “fix” don’t believe it. It needs renewing regularly. But it does work.

She also has a web site somewhere that you can put your address on and it will slow down the junk mail you receive.

You do need to know, though, that if you respond to any of those requests for “votes” — whether on the air or by phone, we’re told that you create the “significant” relationship such that advertisers on the web site that’s requesting you to vote can get at you if you put your phone number into the fill-in of personal information. That means, if I interpret it right, that any advertiser with whom you have a “significant” relationship can keep calling you and they are within their “rights” to bug (call) you.

Haven’t been able to verify that last part though, but we don’t participate in those online polls anyway.

When I had the landline, some times I would say, ‘Hold on a minute ... ‘

Put the phone down and walk away. Eventually, I would hear the ‘phone off the hook’ tone and hang up the receiver.

==

Other times, as soon as they started their sales spiel, I would interrupt with “not interesting, thank you, bye” and hang up before they could continue.

As a retiree we watch TV quite a lot. Our direct TV has a caller ID system so an incoming call is displayed and visible from all around the room and only needed a phone line attached. Very handy and we can screen calls. If we do not answer it goes to an answering machine and usually they hang up. Works for me!
