A couple died and their 16-year-old son went missing after being swept into sea in Northern California while trying to save their dog, authorities said Sunday.
The family was at Big Lagoon, a beach north of Eureka, Saturday afternoon when the dog chased after a thrown stick and got pulled into the ocean by eight to ten foot waves, said Dana Jones, a state Parks and Recreation district superintendent.

These stories always end the same way.
Sad. Wonderful beaches in Northern California and the Oregon coast. But you don’t want to mess around when the waves are up.
Very sad and tragic.
Great to look at, but you are nuts to go swimming there.
How do they know what happened? Were their witnesses?
That called no assistance when it was happening?
The ones that make national news always end in the same way. If the dog had drowned and everyone else survived I doubt that we would be reading about it.
Obviously it wasn’t the Romney’s...............(okay, I’ll go away now.....)
It is best to decide in advance what to do in these situations, not give in to the adrenaline and emotion at the time.
You should not risk your life to save an animal.
You might to save a person, particularly a loved one. But to attempt a rescue that you really can’t particularly achieve does not help. It is a tough call, but just running headlong into danger does not always help someone.
So sorry for the loved ones of this family.
There is a surviving daughter who witnessed this happening to her family and called ranger for help (useless)
While one family member might have gone in for the dog, the others died trying to save each other

Everyone died going in for someone else—not the dog—in that the son who initially got into trouble going after the dog got out after his father went in after him, and then he and his mother went in after his father.
Seems like they were playing fetch into the ocean riptide. The family probably had no idea of the danger until it was too late.
I love my dog. I would die for my kids, but not for my dog.
16 year old son went in after dog. When the son got in trouble, Dad went in after the son. The son and the dog got out on their own. Dad was in trouble, so Mom and the son went in after Dad. The daughter went for help.
I can't fault the Dad. I would have gone in after my child. I believe that my wife has enough sense, however, that she would not then go in after me or allow my child to go back in after me.
As a Dad, I would have no regrets if I died to save my child. But I would be really pissed off in the afterlife if that sacrifice only resulted in my wife and child dying too.
You throw the stick into waters, you are responsible for your dog. Not the entire family, but definitely whoever threw the stick!
People don’t make these decisions saying, “I’m going to risk my life to save my dog.” They don’t think they’re risking their lives. They think they’ll be okay. They overestimate their strength and underestimate the strength of nature.
The other family members went in to save beloved humans, not the dog.
