What is a good camera to buy for a reasonable price that will take pictures of people, posing, athletic events etc, that is easily postable to a website or facebook?
Check B&H Camera for their used gear.
The earlier, 20 D or 30 D might be in your price range.

It doesn’t sound to me like he wants to go DSLR.
I paid $99 for a Canon PowerShot A1300 16.0 MP Digital Camera 4 months back. It has become my wife’s favorite camera, since it will take both photos and high def 720p video. I did get a 32G SD chip for it and it will hold about 3 hours of video and thousands of photos. It will use rechargable AA cels or AA alkalines right off the shelf. A single charge on the cells is good for about an hour of video.
Now that my wife takes it, I’ll probably not get it back and will have to use my Nikon DSLR.
I love my Sony cybershot. Great photos, panoramics, movies, etc. Just buy an extra battery as one will go down over a period of time even if the camera isn’t turned on.
On the high end of inexpensive $300 Nikon - Coolpix S800c 16.0-Megapixel Digital Camera
The low end is around $150
Samsung - Wi-Fi WB150F 14.0-Megapixel Digital Camera

We appreciate your effort typing that long post all by hand.
I'm looking for a viewfinder model. I'm checking reviews for low light capability and lens speed.
I'm also considering price.
I also refer to RESELLER RATING to check out any vendor I'm suggesting.
Most of my gear is used, much of it from KEH. I've saved thousands of dollars and have a lot of reliable gear.
It seems like every time a thread like this starts a lot of folks jump in trying to spend lots of money.
Some of us ain't got a lot!
I swiped it!
I like mine a lot! Bought it for a trip to Europe. Took over 4,300 pics at 18 megapixel. Awesome! Bought it at BestBuy. 3 years no interest deal. Cost $25 a month!
I’ve sold cameras, and owned many. I was disappointed with the photo quality in my Canon, which died for no apparent reason. If you buy a Nikon, buy two because one of them will usually be in the shop for repair. I’ve owned Sony before and after the above cameras and have never been disappointed with Sony.

You may have to decide what your priorities are...taking decent pictures, or posting them to the internet?
First of all, even with some of the point-and-shoot cameras, taking decent pictures of sporting events will likely only be possible if you are standing on the field of play. The zoom capability simply isn't enough to get a decent picture that isn't blurry. Unless you can get on the field of play, decent sport shots almost require digital SLRs with large, zoom lenses.
Point-and-shoots like Canons or Nikons are great for most portrait-taking, either indoors or out. Many of these cameras offer some digital processing of photos, and even special effects. There are probably some of these that allow wireless transfer to a laptop, where you can upload to the internet. It just depends on what you mean by "easily postable."
You may find that for the perfect balance between "decent photos" and "easily uploadable" is achieved with a digital camera, such as an iPhone, Galaxy, or something similar.
I trust this guy’s opinion. Here are his recommendations for cameras in every price range... http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm
I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25 that I bought used - but in like new condition - on Ebay for less than $100.00. Leica lens, 16 mega pixels, 8x zoom all in a size that will fit in your shirt pocket. Great pics, very happy with it.
My Fujifilm F500EXR is suitable for my needs. It was $250 last March. Takes really good family photos and action shots. In theory, I could post directly to FB without a computer, but I don’t. I haven’t figured out the right setting for low lighting though. Also takes good video.
