Check B&H Camera for their used gear.
The earlier, 20 D or 30 D might be in your price range.

I paid $99 for a Canon PowerShot A1300 16.0 MP Digital Camera 4 months back. It has become my wife’s favorite camera, since it will take both photos and high def 720p video. I did get a 32G SD chip for it and it will hold about 3 hours of video and thousands of photos. It will use rechargable AA cels or AA alkalines right off the shelf. A single charge on the cells is good for about an hour of video.
Now that my wife takes it, I’ll probably not get it back and will have to use my Nikon DSLR.

I love my Sony cybershot. Great photos, panoramics, movies, etc. Just buy an extra battery as one will go down over a period of time even if the camera isn’t turned on.

WiFi cameras make it easy to post to the internet. They are easy to use and can do every thing a causal user wants. They can be set up to send your pictures to one of several sites like photobucket that you can use to post pictures places like Free Republic. If the sporting events are of your kids events they can take good pictures of them.

On the high end of inexpensive $300 Nikon - Coolpix S800c 16.0-Megapixel Digital Camera

The low end is around $150

Samsung - Wi-Fi WB150F 14.0-Megapixel Digital Camera

I've bought "BARGAIN" grade stuff from KEH and it's good functional gear.

What is KEH's warranty policy? We unconditionally guarantee all merchandise for 14 days, no questions asked, from the invoice date. If you are not 100% completely satisfied with your purchase you may return any unused or defective merchandise for a prompt refund within 14 days of your invoice date. Please contact a customer service representative via email at service@keh.com or phone (770) 333-4200 PRIOR TO returning the item, so we may solve your problem in the fastest, most convenient manner possible. New Equipment Warranties on new equipment are provided by the manufacturer. New equipment must be returned to the manufacturer for service after 14 days from the invoice date. Used Equipment KEH includes a 6 month, non-transferable warranty on used products. Defective equipment must be returned to KEH and may be repaired, replaced or refunded at our option. Warranty is voided in the event of customer damage or misuse. Select collectible items are not guaranteed to be sold in working condition as they are sold for collectible value only. Items purchased from our AS-IS category are sold as "no warranty and no return". Warranty limited to repair or replacement of equipment only and does not include cost of rentals, lost fees, or other expenditures. Certain items in Collectibles are sold for their collectible value only and are not covered by any warranty. These categories include Agfa/Ansco, Kodak Collectibles, Large Format Collectibles, Miscellaneous Collectibles and Novelty. Also exempt from warranty is As-Is equipment. An optional 1 to 3 year warranty (from date of purchase) is available for many of our new and used camera bodies and lenses. The warranty must be purchased at the same time as the covered equipment. The price of the warranty is based on the type and value of the equipment. If you wish to add a warranty to a web order, please contact the sales department at (770) 333-4200 or email sales@keh.com with your web order number. Do you offer extended warranties? Yes, KEH does offer third party extended warranties covering the vast majority of our new and used bodies and lenses. Please contact a KEH sale representative at (770) 333-4200 for pricing information, as the extended warranty must be purchased on the same invoice as the equipment being covered by the warranty. Due to the complexity of ensuring the correct extended warranty is purchased, KEH does not offer extended warranties on its website. What do KEH's equipment grades mean? We believe that our grading system is the best in the industry and offers an option for every taste and budget. We strive to provide clear, accurate descriptions of each grade so you will know what to expect when you buy from us. When you trade or sell your equipment to us, we evaluate it using the same criteria. NEW As packaged by the manufacturer complete with manufacturer’s USA warranty. Not previously owned or used by a consumer. *You have probably seen the words “NEW” or “LOWER PRICE” listed online where prices usually appear. Due to certain manufacturer’s minimum pricing requirements, we are not permitted to publish the price if we sell it for less than the manufacturer’s Minimum Advertised Price (MAP). While these listings may seem inconvenient, it is our way of letting you know that when you call or click-through on the website, you will be quoted the lowest pricing anywhere for comparable items.* NEW DEMO As packaged by manufacturer complete with manufacturer’s warranty. Never owned by a consumer but used for demonstration.* LN “Like New” 97-99% of NEW. Includes original box and instructions.* LN- “Like New Minus” 97-99% of original condition. Extremely slight wear only seen upon very close inspection. Box and accessories usually not included. Glass perfect.* EX+ “Excellent Plus” 90-96% of original condition. Exceptionally nice. May have slight wear on finish but visible only under close inspection. Glass very clean.* EX “Excellent” 80-89% of original condition. Shows moderate wear for the age of the item. May have small dents and/or dings and slight finish wear. Glass may have slight marks, anomalies and/or blemishes that will not affect picture quality.* BGN “Bargain” 70-79% of original condition. Shows more than average wear for the age of the item. May have dents, dings and/or brassing and finish loss. Glass may have marks, anomalies and/or blemishes that should not affect picture quality.* UG “Ugly” Very rough looking. Multiple impressions in metal, excessive finish loss and brassing. Glass will have marks, fungus and/or haze which will affect picture quality.* AI “As-Is” Usually to be used for parts only. All equipment sold in As-Is category carries no warranty nor return privileges. The equipment most likely has one or more functions that are inoperable and may have missing pieces. Defects will include, but are not limited to the problems listed on the description, however the standard KEH grade will apply for the cosmetics of the item.* Glass Disclaimer* Frequently, lenses, even when brand new, will have a slight amount of dust visible within the lens elements. This is a result of the manufacturing process and will not affect image quality or resolution. As a result, used lenses may exhibit the same consistencies. ACCESSORIES INCLUDED: NEW and LN equipment as packaged by manufacturer. Manufacturer or distributor does not always provide straps, batteries, caps, shades, etc. Instruction books, caps, batteries, cases and straps sold separately for all other grades. What accessories come with used equipment? Like New products are as packaged originally by the manufacturer. The manufacturer or distributor does not always provide straps, batteries, caps, shades, etc. For all other grades Instruction books, caps, batteries, cases and straps, etc. are sold separately unless otherwise noted in the product description.

I bought the 20 D and enjoyed the heck out of it. B&H took it in as a trade on the 60 D and “kit” lens.
I have an iMac with iPhoto and manipulating photos is a breeze.

Any camera from any of the major camera makers is going to take great pictures most of the time. I have a $100 Canon and I am always pleased with the pictures I get out of it. If you just want to take snap shots get a little one you will actually take with you everywhere. More expensive cameras give you more control, but to use the control you have to know what you want to change. If you don't plan on using different shutter speeds and apatures then it probably isn't worth it to get a pro or semi-pro camera just to use it like a point and shoot. If "shutter lag" is an issue, then you will need a something bigger than a typical point and shoot. If you are trying to shoot in low light without flash then you will need a camera with a fast lens, which probably means an interchangable lens system. If you want to shoot stop-action shots on a soccer field and get pix that look like Sports Illustrated, you are going to have to use a higher end SLR. I own about 20 cameras, and countless lenses. Each one is capable of taking great pictures, but isn't always the right tool for every job. Here is a top of the line point and shoot that is carried by a lot of professionals as the back-up, or off duty camera. Of course they want the ability to customize and set things manually. If that's not important to you then you could get something with less dials and knobs that has the same raw image quality for less money. But this camera is one that you will never grow out of. Canon G12.

What I'm trying to recommend is a versatile camera with good image quality.

I'm looking for a viewfinder model. I'm checking reviews for low light capability and lens speed.

I'm also considering price.

I also refer to RESELLER RATING to check out any vendor I'm suggesting.

Most of my gear is used, much of it from KEH. I've saved thousands of dollars and have a lot of reliable gear.

It seems like every time a thread like this starts a lot of folks jump in trying to spend lots of money.

Some of us ain't got a lot!

Get the Can 60D with the 18-135 lens. A bit heavy but it does everything you could want.

I like mine a lot! Bought it for a trip to Europe. Took over 4,300 pics at 18 megapixel. Awesome! Bought it at BestBuy. 3 years no interest deal. Cost $25 a month!

I suggest taking a few minutes and read these reviews.
From there you can do comparisons and there's also a Digital Camera Finder feature.
From their Top 5 digital camera page - I'd go with their recommendation of the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS (black).
Averaging about $250, but Christmas sales should offer a cheaper price.

I’ve sold cameras, and owned many. I was disappointed with the photo quality in my Canon, which died for no apparent reason. If you buy a Nikon, buy two because one of them will usually be in the shop for repair. I’ve owned Sony before and after the above cameras and have never been disappointed with Sony.

What is a good camera to buy for a reasonable price that will take pictures of people, posing, athletic events etc, that is easily postable to a website or facebook?

You may have to decide what your priorities are...taking decent pictures, or posting them to the internet?

First of all, even with some of the point-and-shoot cameras, taking decent pictures of sporting events will likely only be possible if you are standing on the field of play. The zoom capability simply isn't enough to get a decent picture that isn't blurry. Unless you can get on the field of play, decent sport shots almost require digital SLRs with large, zoom lenses.

Point-and-shoots like Canons or Nikons are great for most portrait-taking, either indoors or out. Many of these cameras offer some digital processing of photos, and even special effects. There are probably some of these that allow wireless transfer to a laptop, where you can upload to the internet. It just depends on what you mean by "easily postable."

You may find that for the perfect balance between "decent photos" and "easily uploadable" is achieved with a digital camera, such as an iPhone, Galaxy, or something similar.

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH25 that I bought used - but in like new condition - on Ebay for less than $100.00. Leica lens, 16 mega pixels, 8x zoom all in a size that will fit in your shirt pocket. Great pics, very happy with it.

My Fujifilm F500EXR is suitable for my needs. It was $250 last March. Takes really good family photos and action shots. In theory, I could post directly to FB without a computer, but I don’t. I haven’t figured out the right setting for low lighting though. Also takes good video.
