Not that it validates the Star Trek myth, but Nelson commanded a 28 gun frigate at 21 years old.
George Takei (Sulu)
Nelson joined the navy at 13. He had extensive experience in his teens, including combat. And even Nelson didn’t take over command of the most powerful ship in the British navy, nor did he conduct independent operations of anything significant until much later. The British navy also had a lot more frigates than there were starships in the Federation.

Mid 20s.
The new Kirk was still an Academy student, wasn’t he? He had never served on anything anywhere. Never been in space, that I remember seeing in the movie. No experience with ships or tactics. Never served under a good or bad commander. Just a rebellious “maverick” with a chip on his shoulder, like a taller Tom Cruise, who doesn’t need experience, training or anything. Because, after all, he’s a genius.
Will Spock be his “Goose”?
He is in his mid 20s, the movie moved really fast through his early life. The idea is that he has his father’s genetics so he will excel. I kind of liked the new movie, it wasn’t this focus on a utopia, they went in guns blazing.
And I like escapism in my movies. There is enough reality every day here, that it is nice to go into something and just step away from that.
Seeing what is happening to the American workforce because of Obamacare is heartbreaking. Knowing that kiddos just starting out or people on hard times have to struggle even more just to recover is devastating. Its nice to get away some times.
I was simply pointing out that there are numerous examples of exceptional young people displaying skills or being given (or assuming) levels of responsibility and command normally associated with those many years their elder. I mentioned Nelson simply because naval command is perhaps the best real world analog for the Star Trek/Star fleet mythos.
Alexander the Great and Joan of Arc were commanding armies in the field when they were 16-18. Farragut was given command of a captured ship to pilot to port when he was 12. I'd point out that Star Trek is fiction, so the "realism" is really in the mind of those who subject themselves to it and they are free to accept or reject it. Certainly, a 19 year old being given such immense responsibilities stretches the limits of credibility, but there are just enough historic precedents to keep it in the realm of (extremely remote) possibility. Then again, there is far more entertainment (and money) in the fantastic than there is in the mundane.
The new Kirk is a jerk with a huge chip on each shoulder. He wouldn’t be qualified to lead anyone anywhere until he grew up.
Alexander the Great was raised to be king. Joan of Arc talked to God. The new Kirk is a brat with exceptional skills at alienating people. So they give him command of their most powerful vessel and authority to negotiate treaties, etc.
Right.
Folks can watch what they want, but suspension of disbelief shouldn’t be made any harder than necessary. The new ST is just more of Hollywood glamorizing the ‘bad boy’. I’m surprised they didn’t make him half-black and fond of teleprompters...
I recall the Captain who met the moties being inexperianced and he messed up. What was the reason for a young Captain?
I liked the reboot. They may have screwed up the old storyline or timeline but I expect some great movies despite JJ
Still waiting for ringworld and Louey wu on the screen.
The Cpt who made first contact with the live Moties did indeed mess up - and he was a craggy 40 year old. The jump through light speed was stressful and caused a period of disorientation after the jump. That lag period could be the difference between life/death and younger officers did better than older ones. Not the case in Star Trek but I just had to throw that in here.
I am very sorry for your loss. :(
I view it as Star Wars fans getting revenge on the Trek universe. Heaven forbid they could’ve come up with original characters and set it after TNG/DS9 instead of this unholy mess...
Instead, we get:
Captain Pike as John F. Kennedy in the Navy.
Teen Kirk as a snot-nosed brat with zero experience who couldn’t command a dinghy.
Angry Spock who has the hots for Uhura.
McCoy who looks like Gary Mitchell (and where is Gary Mitchell ?)
Comedy Scotty.
Chinese Sulu (Where’s Kumar ?)
A 10-year old “Butters” Chekov.
Bitchy cheerleader Uhura.
Roddenberry is spinning in his grave.
Just like sports or politics, people who enjoy both have WILDLY varying opinions.
I wouldn’t say that Chris Pine replaces Bill Shatner for me but the series needed to be freshened up.
I’m ok with this kind of “reboot” if it’s done well and I think they did a good job of it.
Also, they all but wiped out the Vulcans when they destroyed their homeworld. That will significantly change the future storylines.
If I used that as a barometer of whether or not to see a movie or watch a TV show, I’d never do either.
Indeed.
Fake gay Spock is currently playing a serial killer psychologist on FX’s “American Horror Story”. Convincing performance.
I’d like an “LA Confidential” remake with you in the role of “sgtjackvincennes”.
“Just Jack!”
Funny silly boy
goofy Star Trek ideas
and two senators
Fake Spock is a poof
Looking at the pointy ears
Vulcans cry sad tears
FX cable channel
More cash in Rupert’s pockets
Now no more Twinkies
And let's not forget "Ender's Game" that had kids leading entire battle fleets. Seems age-ism works both ways...
The trailers for ‘Lone Ranger’ and ‘Man of Steel’ BOTH showed up online today...both trailers will probably be attached to the ‘Hobbit’. By the time you get thru those two trailers; and the Star Trek preview; many geeks will be worn out before the main feature begins...
