Too bad Australian Cattle Dog is not on the list. Our one is especially aggressive towards any stranger, and always barks at anything in the range of her senses.
My Dad’s German Shepard was absolutely useless. It didn’t bark at the intruders. It only started barking when he scuffled with the intruders, but did nothing to really protect him.
Our Shih Tzu might bark a little, but she considers every visitor to be a new best friend so she’d probably roll over on her back for a tummy scratch.
I have a black lab that weighs in at about 120 lbs, he loves people and when you look at him he smiles. It is creepy and freaks out strangers, he wags his tail and bares his teeth at the same time, kind of a silence of the lambs thing.
We were burgaled a few years back. We had our small beagle/basset mix in the back part of the house with the doors closing off that part of the house. She’s a small dog with a big bark and the burglars didn’t enter that part of the house.
Years ago I read an article on guard dogs and hope it was not an Urban Legend. Some guy saw a German Shepherd for sale - CHEAP - in a local classified.
Intrigued, he visited the owner, who ran a small country general store. The owner had been burgled a couple of times and bought a “vicious” German Shepherd to guard the place at night.
Sure enough, one night a buglar broke in and ransacked the store. The dog slept through the whole thing.
When the Sheriff came to investigate, the dog woke up and bit him.
Hence the low sale price.

We don’t have a dog, but my sister-in-law had a gorgeous German Shepherd for protection. He was trained in the Schitzhund (sp?) method. He would likely have killed a real intruder.
With family, though, he was a sweetheart. I miss that dog.
Showing some tooth as part of the Happy Smile is not big deal. It's when the lips are retracted and the hair rises that it becomes a concern (like my part Chesapeake).
My Black Lab has big white teeth (that's all they can see, 'cause NO light is reflected by the dog) that scare folks (who obviously don't know Labs) when she smiles the Happy Dog Smile.
I don’t know how our dogs would react. Our newer dog is a chow mix but she’s pretty cautious and I would not put it past her to at least bark and growl. Whether she would bite I don’t know. They alert to anyone walking by the house. Our Rottie/GSD mix is big and intimidating but he wants to be everyone’s friend. He did growl at someone he saw approaching the front door. How he would act once they were in the house I don’t know. The problem with pets is often they are reprimanded against barking or growling at anyone in your home, so unless they are trained, they aren’t likely to do anything to anyone once they’ve entered the home IMHO.
My wee angels? They bark, but that’s it. Not a bit of threat to anyone, ever.
Of course I’m the one with the trigger finger.
We make a good team.
I’ve read that about ACD’s, they’re on my list of possibilities if and when I get a dog.
For now, my cat rules the roost. And she is one heck of a guard cat, too! Some workmen were fixing the electicals on the side of the house once, as soon as they got near the porch she turned into a snarling, yowling monster. Which was quite a surprise, because she’s usually such a people-cat.
It’s always a question of getting the right dog.I tell the breeder what kind of personality we want,and so far he’s provided the right dogs.The parents have always been Schutzhund rated,their offspring have had what it takes.
My poochies(Nemo-half Pomeranian, half maltese) would bark like crazy, then flip over for tummy rubs..Maxie(Pure bred Shih tzu) would just bark but do nothing

My dog Goober treats each doorbell ring initially as possible fresh meat and if she doesn’t recognize you, you probably will be!

My dogs, two shelties, continue barking until I tell them NO BARK. When they bark, whether it be thunder, or a package left on porch with bell being run, or whatever, they usually will not stop until I get up, go look and tell them it is ok and good little guard dogs. :)
That said, I hope I never have to find out. I spend a lot of time at home alone these days, I’m a SAHM, so I love having them and they give me a bit of a sense of security, not as much as my various guns do, but again, hope I don’t have to use them. I will though.
I know right now what would happen. My Shiatsu-Yorkie mix would yap her ass off till they got in, the 60 pound border-collie/lab would not bark would lick attack and then show them where the silver was.
Like others I count on he little one waking me then I grab my bedside gun.
