Hi FReepers...
For the last year, my wife and I have been giving serious consideration to moving our family out west.
We are born and raised New Englanders. We're a homeschooling family that enjoys outdoor mountain activities and also the arts and sciences.
We are looking for a conservative area [low taxes, less government, personal freedom, family friendly] and were wondering if anyone out there might have some recommendations. I have focused on Idaho and Montana, but am receptive to other suggestions.
I plan on making a trip out early next year to investigate... thanks in advance to all who reply!
Too many tourists!
Alabama! And they even have coastline!
I appreciate the reply. As you might tell, I am in the initial stages of moving. I don’t know where to. I know where I am at, is not where I want to be. I don’t look to be rich, or for a place that offers the biggest paying jobs. I am just looking for inside knowledge of these states, I may never know.
Can anyone from the Reno, Nevada area comment on taxes, homes. Good place to live.
(I know Nevada went to Obama and has Harry Reid~)
I like east Tennessee. New VW plant in Chattanooga, nurses always in demand, no state income tax, consistently red state. Absolutely do not tell the natives how you did it elsewhere. You’ll only piss ‘em off and they are likely armed. Otherwise very friendly. Summer can be long and hot but winter isn’t as brutal as you’re used to. Good luck.
See my post 79.
Too cold up there. Come to Arizona. Yuma is awesome in the winter.>>>>>
Lived/ worked there for 20 years, loved it, but too many “snowbirds”
I am around the Chattanooga area. Your post about sums it up. LOL Chattanooga is so beautiful with its mountains and the Tennessee River. Not too far from the Smokies, either.
what is happening in Texas?
Check out Kansas, no kidding. Nicer winters that the northeast. Much nicer people. Better traffic. Logical home prices. Good governance.
We have been looking at property in southwest Missouri around Branson. Nice country!
You can always open a Scotch Tape Boutique (80s SNL skit); that one’s still available.
Forget Florida!
Its becomming a cesspool.Maybe some isolated backwoods areas, but the cities area DISASTER!
As a military brat (and wife), Ive lived all over this country and a few other countries. This is the best.

Add to that, great gun laws, inexpensive housing, a $10 as issue concealed carry with reciprocity in 28 states (and no handgun classes needed), great hunting and fishing, and they just told the DEA to shove it when the DEA wanted to know where they were getting their drugs for the death penalty.
South Dakota gets a bit cold sometimes but it is a great state. Even though I grew up in California, I spent my summers there and my mom’s family has been there since the 1840’s.
If your wife is a nurse, check out the Va—veterans affairs—for jobs. they are hiring nurses like crazy now..and the Va is evrywhere.

I am actually 135 miles away in WA State (eastern WA is conservative also) and would relocate there if I could. Gateway to Hell's Canyon; Snake River forms state line between it and Clarkston, WA. Down in that river valley, it does not have cold temperature extremes of other locations in Idaho and Montana. Lewiston is not on or near any interstate highways and that might be viewed as good or bad depending on your perspective. The relative isolation to me is very appealing.
What part, and why?
I agree and could be added to my comment about Lewiston.
Also, I know that one of the very small towns in central Idaho voted overwhelmingly against Obama (I am assuming not that many were really wild about Romney).
Yes it is. Lots of small towns. Good farm country. Branson itself is pretty expensive. Hollister is a little less so. Go out about 30 to 50 miles from there, and land is even cheaper.
Lots of lakes, hunting and fishing. We vacation in Branson every summer. Springfield is the largest town close to Branson. So many people attend college in Springfield and fall in love with the area, that wages are a little depressed, cause they will take less money to stay there.
Friendly people too.
