The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Thanks what a great Idea! Nice video!
I got my sweet potatoes dug, my guess is around 200 lbs. I still have lots of clean up left in the garden before the ground freezes solid.
I ran across this story and wondered if you had seen it. I do not know if this is any where near you as cats hunt. The drought may have forced some animals to seek new territory to hunt.
Greetings from western PA. It finally stopped raining after a week of hurricane Sandy’s effects. My cabbage plants both green and purple look glorious with the raindrops glimmering on their leaves. My marigolds do well in the mix of 40’s temps and rain. However it’s supposed to drop to just above freezing tonight so I brought my potted plants of marigolds inside. It will go back up to 50 degrees by Wed and I’ll set them back outside. I try to keep them going every year as long as I can, then harvest the flowers for storage for planting in the spring. Marigolds don’t do well inside with the furnace on, so I eventually cut the stalks and put them in a vase for decoration and to dry out.
If it don’t rain tonight I will dig sweet potatoes and turnips tomorrow. Still a few carrots coming up. Otherwise garden is ready to be put to rest
Ellington is about an hour or so away. Thanks for the link. I had not heard that we had an occasional Mountain Lion.
I see a fox come through my backyard now and again, and my daughter hit a deer driving to work. I also read a while back that we have some bears now too.
Glad to hear that you and your plants are doing well.
That looks pretty good - same concept!
I posted a reply to this several hours ago, but computer has been slow all day, and it appears it never finished posting. So sorry - I wasn’t ignoring you.
I too just don’t have the energy to do a lot anymore. My composting consists of dumping kitchen scraps, some shredded paper or fall leaves on top, and the occasional dump of a pot of flowers that have finished blooming.
That brandy sounded good - have never tried it hot. Hope you enjoyed it.
Planting more pansies this afternoon.
I doubt you would see this big of a cat unless it wanted you to. Anyway, it is at least confirmed there is one in your area, and more than likely where there is one there are more.
I admire your industry. All I will do this weekend is peek under the row covers to see if anything needs a bit of water.
Thanks for the link. I showed it to Hubby. He is really interested in it.
Beautiful day here and I have waited all day for the cable guy to call. Grrrrrrrr

Yes my plants are doing well. Temps were 40 degrees today no rain and the kohl plants will hopefully keep their leaves thru the first big snow, whenever that comes.
We are working hard to finish our back porch remodeling job. It had been enclosed by the previous owner into a storage room and had a roof leak that rotted the plywood siding walls. Lovie wanted a screened porch, so I ripped out the outer load bearing wall and rebuilt it, along with an end wall that has the rear entrance storm door. It's finally down to the painting, then the screening. This porch is where we will move all the container plants to for winter. Last year, when it was a falling down storage room, we hung (2)48" grow light fixtures connected to a timer that gave the plants 12hrs of light automatically every day. Our plants survived the winter in better condition than ever and because of that, they had a great year this year outdoors. We will use staple on plastic sheeting for wind resistance and may place an electric heater in the on real cold nights. Over the course of this project, I had to learn some basic brick laying skills, move and add new electric outlets(dealing with HOT wires) insulate the ceiling, and stretching screen yet to come. Before and after photos will be posted after I am finished, shortly, I hope.
Looking forward to the pictures. My granny always had a back porch or side porch on their house in rural areas. It usually was a lean to style with one wall being the house, and waist-high window and 1 door on the other walls.
In addition to an old fashioned mud room, there were always several plants. There was an old fashioned table, basin, and a bucket of water with a dipper.
You could not enter the house for supper, until you cleaned up at the basin. Before bedtime, you had to wash your feet in the basin too. LOL.
Sure wish I had one of those porches here.LOL.
