Well, Spunky, why don't people store some water and food to be ready for any emergency? People here, year after year, when they hear a hurricane is headed our way, rush to the grocery store, cleaning it out of water and food and buying all the gasoline. They never change their behavior and store water and food to have on hand.
They eat cold sandwiches until powder comes back on. If power was out two weeks, they would be in trouble since the lunch meat would have spoiled after their ice melted. I don't think they would ever get FEMA here due to Houston being 40 miles south and FEMA would be bogged down there if they ever got there.
It's this way: Be a prepper and save your life, or die. ((people have those two choices)
I have given up on Americans saving themselves, except for preppers.
Central MD is basicallly a non-issue. There were minimal power outages - none of my 3 family households local here lost power at all (I had about 5 blips on Monday but no permanent outage). Usually someone loses it and I was actually concerned about this storm since it looked like Agnes and “prepared”. We live 5 min from old Ellicott City and there was no flooding (per se) or wall-falllings like last year’s Irene/Lee. It was a non-event here.
No one was hurt and no serious property damage. Power back on at 10am today. 40ft pine landed on our dwelling but gently and did no damage. Most of the fence is gone, even the posts in cement. Lost food in the freezer. That’s tough when unemployed but WE’RE well. :-)

here in northern New Jersey at the southern end of Passaic county; power out most locations at least a few blocks in any direction from us, but not us and those within a few blocks around us - a sea of tranquilty - we are truly blessed
Just north of Philly, weathered the storm just fine, got power (and Internet) back this morning. Sure glad I bought that generator last year! There were about 4 or 5 big trees on my street that went down, but no houses were hit thankfully.

I’ll bet most of them went and stocked up on tons of SPAM when we were told Y2k was coming. Yet when THEY KNOW a real disaster is on the way they do nothing.
my niece has an apartment in lower Manhattan, east side, in the Stuyvesant Town complex; like everyone else between the financial district and 34th street they have been without electricity since monday; her office is above 34th street on the west side; she had dinner with a friend, and like your son then joined a friend at the Metropolitan Opera, before going back to her apartment last night - she just told me they have been told they might have electricity back on at their apartment this weekend; she knows she can come over here to my warm and fully powered home in New Jersey if she needs to, only there are no NJ Transits trains from here to Manhattan yet

a nephew lives in Westchester, north of White Plains, in the Pleasantville/Briarcliff area
they are out of power, since Monday,
however, they have been out of power many times when we all (I’m in north Jersey) had the same storm, and they were the only ones I know who lost power
at least this time its only him and his wife, with two boys away at college and a daughter who just moved to Philly
I think I have won the arguments this time and will meet with an electrician at his house next week to discuss setting up a backup generator. When he is out of power, he is out of lights, heat, hot water, cooking & running water (well with an electric pump). He keeps rain barrels in the backyard for just these occasions, so they can at least flush the toilets.
I told him if he can pay the fortune he pays in property taxes - over $20,000, he can afford a backup generator.

SE Conn here, power went off during the storm but I am thankful it came back on that same night. My town is 100% restored as of last night, one of the few in the state not reliant on CL&P or United Illuminating.
No where near the devastation of Long Island (which seems to be ignored), lower NYC, or the NJ coast.
Saw nutmeg check in on the live thread—out of state in Florida I think.

We’re doing fine - thanks for asking! We live on a high point far enough away from the coast. We lost electricity for a few hours - that’s all.
Other FR NJers have been hit hard, though.
I think the issue with gasoline in most places is not the general supply as much electric power for the pumps
looking for gas is more of finding a station with power than it is finding one with gas; many have gas but have no power
better to get a wholesale electric supply company/distributor and a generator manufacturer to offer cheap rentals on some emergency generators for places like gas stations & drug stores
people often have enough food to get by, but run low or run out of meds they refill every month
