It was very cool to see Joe Kittenger as CapCom. You could tell it was an emotional event - love the comments about "Guardian Angel"!!!!

He says that he opened his chute at the prearranged altitude. The guy has discipline—follow the plan because that’s the way you come out of it alive. Play around with the plan and get yourself killed.

He also said that, “so Joe [Kittenger] gets to keep one record [because Baumgartner followed the plan]? That’s great for Joe, Joe’s a great guy.” The guy has humility and decency too.

why didn’t he continue his free fall???

My guess is that it was out of respect for the record holder, who was involved in the mission. He set other records and didn't need that one.

That was BEAUTIFUL!! And his landing was 1-2-3-4 steps - all upright! Better than a perfect gymnastics landing in the Olympics! (From my perspective...)

From what I saw, he maxed out his speed in free fall getting to 728 mph, which is beyond the speed of sound, then he began to decelerate due to increasing drag.

"Let me tell you - when I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble. You don't think about breaking records anymore, you don't think about gaining scientific data - the only thing that you want is to come back alive," he said afterwards at a media conference.

When he reached the planned jump altitude, he popped open the capsule hatch and unbuckled his seat belt. "Sometimes you have to go up really high to understand how small you are," he radioed as he balanced on the narrow step outside the capsule. "I'm going home now."

Skydiver makes highest jump ever.

Two questions I would have asked him:

1. Did you make a sonic boom?

2. What kind of in-suit system do you have for keeping big balls of steel warm?

Wonder what the speed of sound is at the altitude he achieved 728 MPH? I calculate it was 659.8 MPH. Just kidding saw a chart where speed of sound appears to not get slower than 659.8 MPH.

http://www.fighter-planes.com/jetmach1.htm

Looks like the speed of sound is slower at higher altitudes.

His peak speed was 200+ mph faster than Kittinger’s in 1960. He opened the chute at 9,000 feet above sea level, probably about 6,000 feet off the ground. If he’d waited another 15 seconds to break Kittinger’s freefall duration record, he would’ve been too low if there was a problem with the chute opening.

I watched this live for hours and his words made me tear up....I couldn’t tell if he meant he was going home to the Lord or home to earth. It was very intense!

I watched the disengagement .as soon as he got to the steps he leaped. No pause. It seemed apparent he was eager
To complete the mission. I was expecting a longer pause before the leap.
Very brave guy. was happy when he got out of the roll.

If Krispy Creme wanted to pay for it, then yes. But Red Bull didn’t miss the opportunity. They got worldwide coverage.
