I'm looking for some new wine to try but don't want to break the bank. I'm tired of the same old, same old that I always buy.
I know there are a lot of regional wineries which produce limited amounts of affordable wine, but it would be most helpful to have suggestions of wine that can be obtained nationally.
Thanks and cheers!
Razorback Red
I lived in New Zealand almost 7 years and drank some outstanding wines, usually under $5 a bottle, although I splurged a few times for a particularly excellent Australian wine. Wine is a very big deal there. Now back in the U.S., wine is ridiculously expensive for anything nearly as good. I buy Trader Joe’s 2 buck chuck Cab. Sav. It’s not completely horrid. I don’t like Bare Foot or Smoking Loon even if they aren’t that expensive. Rosemont, if you can find it, is a split label from Australia. It’s pretty good, but I know it’s their “export quality” wine which means it isn’t their good stuff. I buy it once in a while if I see it due to nostalgia. Chile produces some good reds. I picked up a couple of Rex-Goliath Cab. Savs. on sale for $4.99 this week-end. A step up from the 2 buck chuck and not bad. I rarely drink white wine. There are very few I like. Pinot Grigio is the only varietal I find I consistently like. I love Pinot Noir, but it’s usually out of my price range, so it’s Cab. Sav. here.
The Stump Jump 2008 Shiraz. Wine Spectator Top 100 - 92 Rated - $8.99 a bottle at Costco. We consumed the better part of 3 cases and still have a couple of bottle in the rack.
The one that’s open and has the most in it.
“I dont drink wine though. In 20 minutes Ill have a terrible headache.”
Me too. Now I just drink brandy and never get a headache.
Ripple.
Corbet Canyon out of Chile sells a box-o-wine, 3 litres worth.
They have a nice little Cabernet. Very drinkable and good with food.
Around 12 bux.
Their Merlot - um... not so good.
“Lindemans”
Your horrible ;) Now I want a Coonawarra Cab. Sav. and am reminded of the trip to the Hunter Valley we had to cancel. What’s better than an afternoon of being bussed around to wineries? Lindemans had some very excellent, reasonably priced wine in New Zealand. I don’t buy what they sell here. It’s not worth the price to me, especially when it doesn’t taste like what I used to drink. The best wine I ever had came from Coonawarra. The price went from something like $3.99 to $89 a bottle. A friend’s brother had bought a couple cases because it was so good before it came popular and the price went up. The soil gives it a very unique taste.
After all the “NOT recommendations”, you may would like a nice Carmenere from Chile. Its a red similar to merlot. We like Root:1 Vineyard, usually around $10.
Root 1 Cabernet Sauvignion.
I like Winking Owl from Aldi’s for $2.69, I prefer the Cabernet.
We like to keep a “Cardboardeaux” red in the refrigerator, and we keep lots of cheap wines from Walmart on hand like Oak Leaf, Lucky Duck, etc. Aldi’s now sells a small variety of cheap wines, too. We also haunt the Woot.com website. They’re getting fairly pricey these days, but around the Holidays they sometimes put out their own blends with fun names.
Yellow Tail cabernet sauvignon works for me. Can be had for $6.99 at Trader Joe`s.
I just got some Smoking Loon a few weeks back for the first time. Purchased another few bottles for “keeping around” a few days after that. I like it.
Trader Joe’s Two Buck Chuck, still that price here.
I like this red sweet wine called Geliso Antonio from Italy. Costs about 10-11 per bottle. Yummy
Agree. Lots of great wineries here in NE Ohio. All the way east to Buffalo. I have heard the nitrates cause headaches n some wines do not have them
Was at Farinaccis last night. Last minute decision or I would have let you know. Wasn’t feeing that hot. Did have 2 glasses of red w my meal
I had never heard of White Merlot until my wife brought home a couple of bottles from a tour of the Biltmore.
