Unarmed Army reservist shot and killed by police at traffic stop on Grand Central Parkway

An Army reservist with a clean record was fatally shot in his car by an NYPD detective early Thursday — before he even had “a chance to put his hands up” in surrender, a witness told the Daily News.

Noel Polanco, 22, was killed on the Grand Central Parkway in what witness Diane DeFerrari called an act of “pure road rage” following a terrifying chase by cops in an unmarked vehicle.

“Noel didn't have a chance to put his hands up. They screamed, ‘Put up your hands!’ and shot at the same time,” said DeFerrari, a 36-year-old bartender who was riding in the front passenger seat. “It was simultaneous. There was a pop and Noel gasped.”

“They acted in pure road rage,” she added.

Following the shooting, DeFerrari said she and a backseat passenger, an off-duty NYPD cop, were ordered out and made to put their hands on the car.

“The cop said, ‘Your friend just shot himself,’” DeFerrari recalled.

The cop who gunned down Polanco offered a different account, according to a source familiar with what he told colleagues. Detective Hassam Hamdy said he pulled the trigger after the Queens man reached down for something that turned out to be a yellow-and-black power drill, the source said.

But DeFerrari insisted Polanco never took his hands off the wheel.

Police sources identified the officer in Polanco’s car as 29-year-old Vanessa Rodriguez. She was waving her police ID out the window just before the shooting, sources said.

"Feds, need to look at the off duty officer but quick, once NYPD get there hands on her the story can take a 360 in a n.y. minute."

Yep -- now the off-duty officer in the backseat is claiming that she was asleep the whole time until the shot went off.

The original story said the officer in backseat was asleep/drunk.

The witness in passaenger seat said nypd were cursing at them during pull over. The officer had a history of cursing out people (prior lawsuits per press).

I believe the nypd officer and his gang murdered the guy..

The original story said the officer in backseat was asleep/drunk.

and yet this story with four authors reads:

"Police sources identified the officer in Polanco’s car as 29-year-old Vanessa Rodriguez. She was waving her police ID out the window just before the shooting, sources said."

Asleep my ***. She saw the whole thing and that's why she is now claiming to have been asleep.

The Feds need to be called in and the off duty officer in the backseat who was waving her badge outside the window before the shooting needs to be given a lie detector test. If he had his hands on the steering wheel, this is murder and the police know it.

Anybody rioting yet or is that just for black shootings?

The shooting officer’s name sounds a middle eastern, is he Muslim maybe this is perfidy under the guise of law enforcement.

Who draws their gun over a traffic stop? Was he the only officer with his gun drawn?

Wonder if this was a racial attack....a Hispanic man gunned down by a Muslim...or Black Muslim?

NYPD story sounds real fishy

Detective Hassam Hamdy said he pulled the trigger

Shouldn't the headline be: "Muslim NYPD Detective Murders Motorist"?

Lets see this POS explain to a jury why anyone in Polanco's position would reach for a power drill.

Couple of things I get from this article:

This particular NYPD unit NEVER does car stops. Ever. For them to pull this guy over he must have been driving like an absolute lunatic. And this is not a back country road we're talking about.

The off-duty cop is a criminal herself who is on her way to being fired. She is technically still employed but she does not have a gun or shield. Can't trust her at all.

As for the shooting I can't say what happened. If he reached under the seat, then he reached. The cops were definitely warranted to have their guns out if they had to pull the car over in the first place. But that's all I can say at this point.

I know a lot of NYPD,on the job and ret’d and the younger ones are always talking about how their prime goal is to get home to their families every night. That mindset may account for the rash of shootings the NYPD has had the last few years. My feeling is that they shouldn’t stay on the job if that’s how they think.

I believe the cop. I mean, that's the first thing I do whenever I get pulled over, reach for my DeWalt drill to show the officer.

How is the driver supposed to operate the window or door lock without reaching?

She is technically still employed but she does not have a gun or shield.

Then who was "the source" for the story that she was waving her badge out the window??? It doesn't say that "she" was the source.

Can't trust her at all.

I won't disagree with that as she is now probably being offered her job back as long as she claims that she was asleep and heard and saw nothing.

Then there’s the Costco shooting of an ex military 30 year old, in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. This has never been explained satisfactorily.

I appreciate what LE does. Just last night I walked Market Street in downtown San Francisco with my family feeling perfectly safe. That does not happen automatically.

And if his hands were on the steering wheel as the passenger [who was not a criminal said] then what???

The cops were definitely warranted to have their guns out if they had to pull the car over in the first place.

When is that warranted??? Show me that in the police manual???

BTW the police vehicles were unmarked.

I’d like to know exactly what the crazy perp with the DeWalt did to cause the cops to go into a “rage”.
He obviously screwed up, big time, because he’s dead.

Maybe it was simply Muslim-on-Latino hatred, similar to what we saw in the Trayvon Martin case... Oh wait, that was Latino-on-black hatred. It’s tough to keep the Balkanization of America straight these days. Once again, congratulations to the Democrats.

The NYPD is corrupt to the core. I got pulled over for a seatbelt ticket once AFTER I exited my car when I had my seat belt on. When I politely asked for the officer’s name I was told we can find another ticket to give. I filed a civilian complaint which was turned down because we were the same race. I found a “hidden” internal affairs complaint #. They called me a month later on NYE at 11:30PM! Then New years day at 6am. Called when back in NY on 1/3 and told sorry, u didn’t call back in time. I then was told to refile the complaint which they contacted me 15 months later.

Look at the facts. This cops were charged with cursing people out in past. The witnesses said (without knowing his background) that an unmarked car was cursing them out. Then the guy died. The cops then said the guy killed himself. I believe the NYPD officer murdered him.
