Is Sunflower Oil Healthier Than Regular Vegetable Oil?
Self | October 1, 2012 | PJ-Comix

I have coupons that allowed me to buy FREE Sunflower Seed Oil. Actually it is 80% Sunflower Oil and 20% Extra-Virgin Olive Oil. I read somewhere that Sunflower Oil is the healthiest of the vegetable oils. I used it to fry onions last night and it tasted fine. So am I just fooling myself or is Sunflower Oil really healthier than regular vegetable oil?

Thanx for the info. Note that it is actually 80% Sunflower Oil and 20% Extra-Virgin olive oil. I will use this for cooking although I also have 100% Extra-Virgin olive oil as well that I will use for salads or in recipes that require it. I also note this from the article:

Oils in plastic bottles from the supermarket, like canola, soya and corn oil, are highly processed, degraded, and possibly sourced from genetically engineered crops. Avoid them!

If I eat too many sunflower seeds, I notice an increase in anxiety. Seriously.

I also note from the link at the article that coconut oil is recommended for cooking. What happened to the big coconut oil scare of a few years ago? Rush talks about this sometimes because coconut oil is the best for making popcorn but then a lot of movie theaters removed it.

Its from the stress of having to carefully open those seeds.

I fry with canola or peanut oil and use olive oil for everything else.

Once upon a time the main substance used for frying in the USA was pork fat.

I use only extra-vergin olive oil for salads and soups, not recommended for frying. Coconut oil is very healthy, I buy mine from the Health Food stores. Wonderful as a spread on toast. It’s expensive but a jar lasts me a long time. Stay away from canola, from my readings it’s made probably with genetically modified corn.
I think what Rush referred to was that coconut oil was not used anymore for popcorn in theaters because the companies were looking for cheaper ways to pop the corn (I might be wrong on this).
Dr. Mercola and earthclinic.com all recommend coconut oil.

We’ve started using coconut oil almost exclusively. But you have to get the NON-HYDROGENATED coconut oil. It’s expensive, so we don’t get the best out there. Do a search on coconut oil. You will be surprised at what you find - especially regarding Alzheimer’s

Are they salted and roasted, or raw?

Still used in secret recipes for the best flavored fried chicken.

True about the non-hydrogenated coconut oil. Swanson vitamins sell their oil at good prices also. It’s the processed oils (and foods)that are not good for our health.

Canola (short for Canadian oil) is made from rape seed. But you're right about it not being very healthy. Another one to stay away from is palm oil.

The sunflower oil people and olive oil people have an ongoing but mostly friendly argument on who is #1 and #2. I'll give sunflower oil a slight edge because it is way more affordable.
