Give Thanks

October 22, 2012

In Lansing, Michigan, during the winter, we don’t get many sunny days. But last year God blessed us with one of those beautiful days, and it seemed that almost everyone was thanking God, except me. As I left my office, a man said, “What a wonderful day we’re having. This is a gift from God!” To which I replied, “Yes, but we’re getting snow later this week.” What ingratitude!

In his letters, the apostle Paul helped his readers to develop a theology of gratitude. He wrote about thanksgiving more often than any other New Testament author. From the 23 times he used the word, we learn a few lessons about thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was always directed toward God and never toward people. People were gifts from God, and Paul thanked God for their growth, love, and faith (1 Cor. 1:4; 1 Thess. 1:2).

Thanksgiving is given through Jesus for everything (Col. 3:15,17). Paul believed followers of Jesus could be thankful for everything because God is sovereign, and He is working things out for the believers’ good (1 Thess. 5:18).

May we intentionally be aware of God’s gifts all around us, and respond with gratitude. In response to God’s gifts, it’s natural to say, “Thank You, Lord.”

Lord, for days that are sunny or gray we simply
want to say, Thank You! And for the daily grace
You give us in Your Son, may we always be faithful
to say, Thank You! You are so good to us.
Gratitude is a natural response to God’s grace.

Read: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-22

In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. —1 Thessalonians 5:18

Mark 4-6

That kitty looks like she’s giving us “the stink eye”, or “The Look” or she’s just really crabby, or maybe it’s her James Cagney impersonation (’you dirty rat...’).

I dunno. Rantings of a crabby old lady. And it’s been raining all day.

The world’s been giving me “the stink eye” lately.

Any of those names would fit very good. I thought she/he
was just so funny!!

We’re not getting our rain yet. Its been sunny and warm but
not too hot. Gets chillier at nights and mornings though!!
I dread whats right around the corner. Seems I’m not as
happy in winter as I am in spring and summer.

Do you want me to whip the world for ya?? Sorry about all
the rain you’ve been having recently! We all get crabby
now and then. For me it was the man who was supposed to
cut a tree for me last Wednesday and he knocked on my door
on Sunday. I told him “the Lord didn’t like us to do
those things on Sunday” but I let him do it anyway. It
had to be cut down before my little building arrives on
the 30th. Thats the replacement for the one the storm
tore down during a bad storm. Thank goodness for my
insurance this time.

Made me feel good too!! Two more weeks to go
and I sure can’t take 4 more years of what we have now! I
am praying for Romney to win!

Here’s a story for ya. 2 months ago, we had the house measured for new windows. We wait 3 weeks while the windows are made. They get here and 5 of the windows were wrong because the guy put wrong (twice as big as needed) dimensions on his order forms. He also ordered the door wrong. We are waiting another 3 weeks because of careless errors. I guess I should have filled out the form for him.

I feel bad in the dark months too. I used to take something for it but it makes me ill now. I tried it again last month and felt horrible after a week on it.

I pray a lot and read Scripture and lately I’ve been reading everything I can get from author Patsy Clairmont. She is part of “The Women of Faith” group. She’s wonderful to read. I’ve been reading her books every night.

I am 3 weeks from being a member of my new church too. I’ve been without a church home for a long time. I found a LCMS (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod) church that I love. My Grama has been a member there for 25 years.

Thanks for the talk,,,,(hugs)

GOOD MILITARY MONDAY TO AMY’S PLACE!

The Soldier’s Code

1) I am an American fighting man. I serve in the forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared to give my life in their defense.

2) I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender my men while they still have the means to resist.

3) If I am captured, I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.

4) If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information or take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of those appointed over me, and will back them up in every way.

5) When questioned, should I become a prisoner of war, I am bound to give only name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering further questions to the utmost of my ability. I will make no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and its allies, or harmful to their cause.

6) I will never forget that I am an American fighting man, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, August, 1955.

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)
