One Proposal For Amtrak Bullet Train Route: Under Long Island Sound
Hartford Courant ^ | 5:01 p.m. EDT, September 3, 2012 | Don Stacom

As Amtrak studies how to bring bullet trains to its frantically busy Northeast Corridor, one design team is suggesting a radically new route requiring a roughly 18-mile-long tunnel beneath Long Island Sound.

Trains speeding from Washington to Boston would run through the heart of Long Island, cross into Connecticut through a tunnel emerging in Milford, head to Hartford and then race east toward Worcester on new tracks running alongside I-84.

The segment between Manhattan and Hartford would cost about $20 billion, according to the University of Pennsylvania's high-speed rail design studio, which first put forward the idea in 2010. Overall, the full 450-mile route from Washington to Boston would cost about $100 billion, PennDesign said.

A fast way to buzz back and forth while figuring out how to spend billions more on big digs. I like it! Shovel ready, baby!

It will never happen. Long Island stops every project, from the bridge what was suppose to connect Long Island with Connecticut at the end of the Seaford Oyster Bay Expwy to the nuclear power plant at Shoreham .

Yes - in typical government form, lets propose the absolutely most expensive path, method, and means to accomplish a job.

The Oyster Bay - Rye Bridge will be built before this..
Now if the 2nd Ave Subway will be finished...
Just another example of liberal utopian fantasy.

Sounds like a GREAT IDEA!!!

Let the governors of NY, Conn, and Mass get together, raise sufficient tax money (or privately fund it - LOL), and then BUILD IT!!!

But don’t dare make me, in Texas pay for it...

I like the “emerging in Milford” part. As long as they have a viewing platform. Oh, wait, I’ll be dead by then.

Long Island is pretty congested too. Plus an 18 mile tunnel is a massive and expensive project. For comparison of costs Long Island RR ticket round trip Ronkonkoma to Manhattan is about 26 dollars. Plus the trains run full during rush hours. Imagine what a roundtrip ticket Boston to DC will cost? A ton of bananas for sure.

There are a half dozen or so bus lines that run between Boston and Midtown Manhattan.I go regularly and pay $15 or less (usually $9) each way.The trip typically takes a bit more than 4 hours even in rush hour traffic.A tunnel under Long Island Sound? Give me a friggin break!

WE have very unpopular multimillion $$$ *busway* being built...no one but our governor wanted it.

Sorry, but you already are paying for this impending debacle in CT The projections for usership are so far off....bus drivers who drive this same route daily, say that their buses are empty now. I can't imagine what this *busway* is going to do but line the pockets of buddy contractors of the gov. It will be CT's own *Big Dig*.

Why do people have to go anywhere, I thought technology was going to take of that for us.

I also thought technology was going to make major construction projects cheaper, but graft seems to be growing faster.
