In a recent interview with The Guardian, Motown legend Stevie Wonder spoke about a variety of subjects, and had the chance to reflect on the many artists that he has influenced over the years. When the topic of current king of R&B Frank Ocean was brought up, Wonder made a colorful array of comments.
Wonder was quick to praise Frank as an artist; the 62-year-old singer-songwriter even sang the hook to No Church In The Wild for Ocean when he ran into him backstage at an event.
However, later in the interview, when he was asked if hed be surprised to see an openly gay artist in 2012 have success in the soul genre, Wonder waded into potentially controversial territory.
I think honestly, some people who think theyre gay, theyre confused, said Wonder. People can misconstrue closeness for love. People can feel connected, they bond. Im not saying all [gay people are confused]. Some people have a desire to be with the same sex. But thats them.
theGrio: R&B singer Frank Ocean comes out: My first love was a man
Wonders remarks may seem a little reactionary to some of his fans, who are used to his consistent message of universal love reflected in almost all of his musical output.
Do you agree with Stevies statement, or is he making an unfortunate generalization of the LGBT community? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
His story is a selling point for radio programmers, music journalists, festival promoters and for crossover into other media as well.
He retroactively "came out" just as he launched the publicity campaign for his new record.
I suspect it's all just a story.
Into the memory hole with this one.
On a slower reading I realize that this is actually a bold statement by wonder.
He will be made to get his mind right for this.
If someone is confused about their gender then, yes, they are confused.
To most others they seem to simply reflect reality.
Gender or sex?
Stevie, I wonder, do you mean like if you want Chick-Fil-A, you need a rooster and a hen confused?
I do not think people are born homosexual. So if one gender chooses to have sex with the same gender then the person is confused about his or her gender.
I think homosexuality IS the mental illness that it was considered to be for all those years before political correctness and the homofacists got it overturned.
I really believe there are a lot of liberals (particularly whites) who became gay because it was politically correct. My brother is one. If you are schooled in liberal America, you are taught that straight white males are the evil oppressors - oppressors of blacks, oppressors of Hispanics, oppressors of Native Americans, oppressors of women and oppressors of homosexuals.
Well, if you happen to be a straight white liberal male, you can’t change your race or your gender but you *can* become a homosexual so you can go through life as a victim like all your other liberal friends are doing and not be thought of as among the evil oppressors. It sounds stupid, I know, but I honestly believe there are liberals (who are inundated with group identity politics) who have convinced themselves they are gay simply because they don’t want the guilt associated with being a straight white male.
Stevie Wonder is a black democrat. You won’t hear a peep out of the libs for his statement. Had he been a white Christian singer, all hell would be breaking loose right now with the left demanding his label drop him immediately. They they’d picket his concerts.

Since Stevie did not say “being gay is so wonderful” or stuff like that...he will get attacked in the HomoFascist community
Among Liberals, it seems to be more important to be Homosexual than to be Black
Pedophiles have often been molested themselves as a child.
I think a lot of gay men have also been molested early on. They don't turn into pedophiles, but become homosexual and identify with their abuser.
How we are first introduced to sex has a lot to do with our sexual identity.
I think they are equating "Universal love" with a compulsion to go in through the out door.
Wonder probably sees a distinction between the two. I bet most of his fans see it also. But not the journalists.
“It sounds stupid, I know, but I honestly believe there are liberals (who are inundated with group identity politics) who have convinced themselves they are gay simply because they dont want the guilt associated with being a straight white male.”
I’ll accept your first statement, that it sounds nuts.
I think there ate plenty of Liberals, “inundated with group identity politics” (as in” “I’m a Liberal”) and, as a Liberal believing every “minority” is oppressed and “because they don’t want the guilt assocaited with being” a “homophobe”, refuse to make any real value judgements on anything labled “gay”; doing so would make them unwelcome in their “community”.
