EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) People from all over El Dorado County say theyre hearing loud booms several times a week, but there are many theories on what is causing them.
I thought it was thunder, said one person.
Its definitely not thunder; too consistent. I thought it was just mining, said another person.
I always considered them to be sonic booms from flying aircrafts for years, said Loring Brunius, owner of Sierra Rock Diamond Quarry.
People who live near Pleasant Valley say their days have been interrupted by loud booms, shaking the floor beneath them.
You can feel it in the ground, no question about it. But no ones been able to figure out why, said Pleasant Valley resident Peter OGrady. I tend to hear somewhere between four to six of these things during the weekdays usually between 11 p.m. and 2 p.m.
Boom, boom, boom, boom just like that, said Lorren Gonzales, who lives near Pleasant Valley.
And the rolling foothills of El Dorado County make it difficult for them to even tell where its coming from.
We asked the owner of Sierra Rock Diamond Quarry what he knew about it. He says they havent blasted since last year. And any miners or quarry owners would need government permission before they can set off any explosives.
Its a federally mandated system, and enforced, said Brunius.
Some think the booms are from nearby wineries using propane cannons to scare away birds.
Weve never done it and I dont know of any other winery that does, said Carrie Bendick, a winemaker at Hollys Hill Winery.
According to USGS, there arent enough seismic stations to pinpoint the exact location. Meanwhile, some say the booms have been around so long and happen so often they barely notice them anymore. Still, others want to solve the mystery.
I would like to know what it is, yeah. And Id like to know when its going to stop too, said OGrady.
CBS13 spoke to Fallon Naval Air Station that said any supersonic flight operations they do are only allowed over Dixie Valley, which is hundreds of miles away.
Some think illegal mining could be the source of the sounds, but Brunius doubts that theory. He said if that was the case, the culprit would have been caught by now.
Whale farts.
Alien crafts breaking the sound barrier ;)
Golf ball cannons
Military training— they do simulation of bomb explosions, attacks, etc. Small groups scattered around the country training. I once met a woman who did the food catering for the group near her home town. Very few people in the area knew about it.
God has taken up bowling.
Or anvil firing
Sky quakes are the result of underground seismic activity.
Here’s a blog about lots of other instances.

We often hear artillery and tanks firing at Ft. Hood which is 60 - 70 miles in a straight line and over 100 by highway.
Yeah, I was thinking that Michael Moore must have something to do with it.
So that’s what it was! We heard it here in Reno. The whole building shook, and the slot machines started spitting out coins! I grabbed me some silver dollars before the security thugs showed up and started filling their own pockets.
NASA sent some low flying jets over SoCal. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/08/nasa-jets-flying-over-la-preparing-for-space-shuttle-endeavour-.html
'Nuff said.
Like jet noise ... the sound of freedom!
Except when you orient the M109A6 180º from your target. That happened at Ft. Hood some years ago. 155 mm artillery sent either 6 or 9 rounds into a farmers barnyard area. He got a few new stock tanks close to his house.
Oops!!! Bet he got sent back to remedial artillery school ;-)
IIRC, it was the forward observers who messed up. You don’t call for more “Fire for effect” rounds when no single round hits near the target. Sugar Loaf range has several distant observation points from which impact can be observed. BTW, it was four rounds, not 6 or 9.

Simply military practice that sonically extends according to atmospheric conditions. Always has been the case. The Navy, even when I was in, practiced next to the San Clemente island (can't remember the target island name) all the time for their 3 inch guns. Glad they're still practicing. Guns need practice.
Computer controlled missle guidance systems are tested off Pt. Mugu and Port Hueneme installations. Often times, the conspiratists see their contrails as some ET space thing. Dipshits all.
Those two installations have tested missles as far back as me being a teenager. I remember see their trails up into the sky as a 16 year old. It was a cool sight as they left Vandenberg and left a "hot trail" up into the sunset.
The military does what it needs to do to test new systems and have certain installations and target points. This is old news.
They sure were. :-) Tried to get photos of those -- never had any luck.
