LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- Celebrity addiction specialist Dr. Drew Pinsky is under fire for helping market an antidepressant for uses not approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
GlaxoSmithKline, which makes the drug Wellbutrin, agreed to pay a $3 million fine on Friday in a Boston courthouse.
The British drugmaker reportedly paid "Lifechangers" host Dr. Drew $275,000 to promote the antidepressant for non-approved uses such as obesity, addictions and sexual dysfunction.

Many drugs have off label use. Beta blockers are used for anxiety and stage fright. Drugs to treat osteoporosis are used to treat Pagets disease and giant cell tumors. The thing is you need a good doctor to decide if the risks outweight any possible benefit.

YES....and I don’t trust the FDA much anyhow...they go after (sue) walnut manufacturers for touting the heart health benefits of walnuts, while letting Frito Lay tout their chips as a health food.....
CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta promoted Obamacare last week so he’s a quack as well.
Wellbutrin is reported to be very effective at enhancing libido in some women. I wonder if Dr. Drew was paid to promote this aspect of the drug.

I took Wellbutrin for Bipolar disorder and I lost 20 pounds due to vomiting.I was not able to put the weight back on for quite some time.

I recall that corporations won a first amendment case on government restricting their free speech. Drug reps were not allowed to show doctors published scientific papers, if they included off-label information. This is a freedom of speech issue.
Good to know....I lump this guy in with Dr. Phil and a whole bunch of unscrupulous televangelists.
