People who have been following the climate debate closely know that one of the most controversial and key elements of the controversy is the so-called hockey stick a graph of supposed global temperature over the past centuries that ostensibly shows a dramatic increase in average temperature in the last century or so (the upward swoop of the graph at that point is the business end of the stick, with regard to the puck). It vaulted its inventor, Michael Mann of Penn State University, to climate stardom, with associated acclaim and government grants, when he first presented it in the late 90s. It was the visual basis of much of the hysteria in recent years, from Al Gores Oscar-winning crockumentary to bogus reports from the UNs Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

I can’t understand these people, when there’s a history of climate that goes back millions of years when crust samples are dug up, that show warmer and cooler climates than today. And as far as we know, the dinosaurs didn’t have SUVs. Cavemen didn’t have SUVs, either, yet they still dealt with periods of global climate change.

It’s agenda driven NOT fact driven.

Mann is still defending his bogus “hockey stick”. As someone recently said, he shouldn’t be at Penn State but in the State Pen.

Well I know that much, but I feel like I’d lose too many brain cells if I try to use our side of the argument the way the Democrats do theirs.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed
(and hence clamorous to be led to safety)
by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins,
all of them imaginary.

What it really should be is the beginning of the major housecleaning necessary if the field is to have any scientific credibility, but that may have to await a general reformation of academia itself. It would help, though, if we get a new government next year that cuts off funding to such charlatans, and the institutions that whitewash their unscientific behavior. Emphases mine, but the fuel for global warming is indeed green. Greenbacks that is...

Beware the hockey stick graph! Almost all hockey stick graphs, no matter the subject, are phony and are designed to produce panic and support the presenter’s viewpoint. Mann’s example was so egregious that investigating researchers found random numbers entered using his algorithm resulted in the same hockey stick pattern.

I thought the article was going to be about hockey being phased out in favor of ringette. (Go Kings!)

Gotta’ love Time magazine. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen that 1977 cover and never noticed the secondary story line,”Beyond Detente: Why We Can Never Beat the Soviets.” I guess they forgot to tell that to Ronaldus Magnus.

The hockey stick is dead? I didn’t even know it was sick. Did beavers eat it?

The energy required to accelerate an object goes up like a “hockey stick” as one approaches the speed of light.
Is Relativity bovine excrement?
Plenty of things in nature show exponential increase - but so far global temperature has NOT been one of them.
The best argument against anthropogenic global warming (besides them being caught repeatedly with their hands in the cookie jar) is that they have no explanation for how we got to the Medieval warm period - or how we got out of it - or why it was NOT a time of unmitigated disaster - but good times all around. And why should be we scared when we haven't yet reached that average temperature?

It would be very amusing to read that article, “Beyond Detente: Why We Can Never Beat the Soviets” with the benefit of hindsight to see what cowardly lackluster lackwit commie sympathizing whackjobs liberals were back then - and still are today.
