French Canadians oppose the draft
Monday, April 27, 1942 www.onwar.com

In Canada... The Mackenzie-King government holds a national referendum on introducing conscription for overseas service. The proposal receives majority support but there is substantial resistance in French-speaking province of Quebec; 72% of the French-speaking voting population oppose the proposition, compared to 80% in favor of it among English-speaking voters.

In Washington... President Roosevelt outlines measures for putting the United States economy on a wartime footing.

In Moscow... Molotov, the Commissar for Foreign Affairs, issues a new note on German atrocities on the Eastern Front.

April 27th, 1942

UNITED KINGDOM: The first operational sortie is made by the de Havilland Mosquito night-fighter. Armed with four 20mm guns it can reach 407 mph. (22)

Minesweeper HMS Fitzroy is mined and sinks within 10 minutes 40 miles ENE of Gt. Yarmouth at 52 39N 02 46E. It is believed that she may have struck a British mine, although this area was extensively mined by both sides. (Alex Gordon)(108)

Destroyer FS La Combattante (ex-HMS Haldon) launched. (Dave Shirlaw)

NORWAY: U-657 was damaged in an Allied air raid at Trondheim. One crewmember was injured. (Dave Shirlaw)

GERMANY: The RAF bombs Rostock for the fourth night in a row. 70% of the city has now been destroyed and 100,000 are homeless.

CZECHOSLOVAKIA: Theresienstadt: 1,000 Jews are deported to their deaths at Belzec and Sobibor.

U.S.S.R.: (Sergey Anisimov)(69)Baltic Fleet, Ladoga and Onega Flotillas: Shipping loss. TS “Svir” is sunk by aviation, at Leningrad.

MANCHUKUO: In the worst mining disaster in history, 1,527 miners have died at the Honkeiko colliery.

CANADA: In the House of Commons in Ottawa, a plebiscite was held to determine the necessity for conscription. After much discussion and political infighting, it was decided that conscription would be implemented “if necessary.” The RCN was almost entirely a volunteer force and the conscription issue played no part in the history of the Canadian Navy.

Patrol vessel (ex-fishing vessel) HMCS Camenita commissioned. (Dave Shirlaw)

U.S.A.: Washington: Roosevelt places the US economy on a full war footing.

Minesweeper USS Candid laid down. (Dave Shirlaw)

A little more on that Luftwaffe Capt.(then) Herbert Ihlfeld...quite an airman.

"Herbert Ihlefeld (1 June 1914 in Pinnow, Pommern – 8 August 1995 in Wenningsen, Lower Saxony) was a German World War II fighter ace who served in the Luftwaffe from 1936 until the very end of World War II in May 1945. He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves and Swords was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. He claimed 132 enemy aircraft shot down; 9 in the Spanish Civil War, 67 on the Eastern Front, and 56 on the Western Front, including 15 four-engined bombers and 26 Spitfires. He survived being shot down 8 times during his 1000 combat missions."

Found it - pg 2.

Quite an airman, indeed. I wonder if he performed all those deeds in an ME-109.

April 27, 1942:

"The Jewish spider entangles the capitals of Europe.
Positioned directly on top of Berlin, the spider is poised to dominate the continent.
The 'international Jewish conspiracy' was a prominent theme in Nazi propaganda."

Headline: "‘Second Front’ Prospects (Baldwin) – 8"

"A landing on the coast of Western Europe as close as possible to the German 'heartland' is the most specific way to create a diversion, but also the most difficult, since the coasts of France and the Low Countries are probably the most heavily defended in the world, and the nexus of airfields and communications is so good as to permit a rapid concentration by the Germans against any invading force.
But any landing within the range of British fighter-based aircraft might be made with the sine qua non of any successful invasion, air superiority, that could not so easily be established elsewhere.
And communication lines would be short and simple."

Shhhhhhh... Hanson Baldwin, don't tell anyone... there's only two places which meet these criteria, and one is the Pas de Calais, but that other... I forget the name.

Shhhhhh... don't let the Germans know.

;-)

I wonder when the first flicker of doubt started to enter the minds of the men in the Reichstag. I wonder how many, if privately sorely regretted the Eastern front. I understand the even Goering tried to talk Hitler out of it. Never mind Stalingrad; even now the war was probably lost.

There have to be some Generals who are fed up and are looking for ways to bump off Hitler.

Page 36 of Life really jumped out at me: “How to Burn Down Tokyo with Incendiary Bombs.” 100 bombers...using the prevailing winds to fan the flames...

Paging General LeMay....

That article really caught my eye too. So even back in early ‘42 less than 10 days after the Doolittle Raid, LIFE is speculating about how to burn down Japanese cities. It’s no wonder we created the bat bomb. It would have been interesting to see how it would have worked.
