A new treatment for prostate cancer can rid the disease from nine in ten men without debilitating side effects, a study has found, leading to new hope for tens of thousands of men.
It is hoped the new treatment, which involves heating only the tumours with a highly focused ultrasound, will mean men can be treated without an overnight stay in hospital and avoiding the distressing side effects associated with current therapies.
A study has found that focal HIFU, high-intensity focused ultrasound, provides the 'perfect' outcome of no major side effects and free of cancer 12 months after treatment, in nine out of ten cases.
Traditional surgery or radiotherapy can only provide the perfect outcome in half of cases currently.

The numbers seem to be off quite a bit. Early prostate cancer is just a few cancer cells throughout the gland. There are no tumors until late stages of the disease. I went back and read half the article and realized the writer knew little about prostate cancer and only got half way through the article.
People have had their prostates removed, and some of them, 5-8 years later show signs of cancer in that area. Time will tell.
Early detection and treatment would seem to be important. Biopsies are falling out of favor,the rap being some doctor think if might help spread the disease. Maybe a way of looking into the prostate gland with an xray type of machine is the way to go. - Tom

Power Color Doppler ultrasound is the best currently available non-invasive method, but it can not definitively diagnose prostate cancer. Biopsies aren’t definitive either unless they’re positive (i.e., if cancer cells are missed by the biopsy needle you’ll get a false negative).
If it does nobody will be able to afford it.

I knew I had prostate cancer about 7 years before the biopsies proved it. I had all the symptoms and It took 3 sets of biopsies years apart to detect it.
I wanted the radioactive seeds implanted but my prostate was so large they didn't want to take a chance it might enlarge it more.
It ended up I got radiated for 42 days Mon- Fri.
Because your prostate moves around about a quarter of an inch on a day to day basis , and to avoid screwing up other body parts in that area; they inserted 2 Gold slivers into my prostate so they could target it exactly on each day of the radiation. Years ago many people were destroyed by radiation hitting outside the prostate and causing the people to have a miserable lifestyle. -tom
After seeing prostate cancer metastasize and race throughout the body and reduce men otherwise healthy as horses to shells ED is the last thing to worry about. In fact, that is an ignorant topic to even think about.

A recent development to deal with that problem is the “Calypso 4d” system:
“The Calypso® 4D Localization Tracking System requires three beacon electromagnetic transponders permanently placed in the prostate gland. These transponders measure approximately 8mm,are not radioactive and do not emit ionizing radiation to the patient.
These beacons send information to the 4D Tracking System that continuously monitors your prostate location and its movement. If your prostate moves beyond a given range, radiation delivery is then paused, realignment is performed, and treatment resumed when the prostate location is back in range.”
A friend had this last year and it seemed to work very well (i.e, no residual/misplaced radiation effects). It only took one biopsy to dx my PCa. I had a robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy in early ‘04, when there were just a couple of hospitals doing it.

The head of theFDA is from M D Andersen. They have a vested interest in radiation therapy.
He has subjected HIFU to a greater set of requirements than any other type of treatment. it’s all political.
My friend left the country to get this treatment. Unlike radiation, etc, with HIFU the crane operator still shows up to work.
Cancer free.
