FRee Tip to Speed up Free Republic
Dubya-M-Dees

Sorry for the vanity, but I wanted to throw this out there in case it hadn't been observed/discussed before. If it has, my apologies.

I noticed this morning on my laptop that Free Republic was loading BLAZINGLY fast. The main listing of articles appeared almost instantly as well as any article selected appeared instantly. I thought, WOW! They've really done some work to get the site to run this fast! Later on my desktop, I saw that the site was the speed I was accustomed to (sorry, not complaining!!) but it was quite a bit slower to list and view articles. I went back to the laptop again, and still blazing. Then I realized, I wasn't logged in on the laptop. Back to my desktop, and I logged out. Now the site was blazingly fast again. My guess is the speed decrease is due to the site having to check my postings for responses. For now, I'm going to leave myself logged out and only log in if I want to post or check my pings. I'm thinking it'll probably help the FR servers as well as they'll not have to do those processes each time I view the site. And that's my FRee tip!

Just before I ditched drudge a while back, I noticed the same thing - the whack-job ad and the main article photo loaded quickly, but the bottom with the links took ages. Good secondary reason to quit him.

I haven’t been logged off since 2003 except the times my computer died. I probably haven’t logged on more than 10 or 12 times.

I'm not even sure that I remember my password ...

Not having yet read the responses, someone may have made this point by now, but I seriously doubt John would've coded the site to refresh one's ping list every time a link is clicked.

It would make much more sense to do a search of the database only when one specifically queries their ping history.

But I've already been wrong once this year, so who knows . . .

Thanks for the tip.

FR has been slow for me for about a year or so; so I stay logged off FR most of the time until ready to post.

That’s an interesting observation.

I’ll have to start browsing FR using two browsers, one logged in, and one not. This machine has 8G of RAM, keeping two open is no big deal most of the time.
