The Slippery Slope Of Success

March 18, 2012

Among the more than 19,000 original epigrams penned by chemist and writer Dr. O. A. Battista is this wise observation: “You have reached the pinnacle of success as soon as you become uninterested in money, compliments, or publicity.” Unfortunately, just the opposite often happens when something we have done is praised and rewarded. A humble heart can quickly become a swelled head.

Just before Saul was anointed king, he saw himself as a member of an insignificant family in the smallest tribe of Israel (1 Sam. 9:21). Within a few years, however, he had erected a monument in his own honor and had become the supreme authority for his conduct (15:11-12). The prophet Samuel confronted Saul for his disobedience to God by reminding him, “When you were little in your own eyes, were you not head of the tribes of Israel? And did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel?” (v.17).

Self-importance is the first step down the slippery slope of what we call success. It begins when we claim credit for God-given victories and modify His commands to suit our desires.

True success is staying on God’s path by following His Word and giving Him praise instead of craving it for ourselves.

Help me, O Lord, lest my heart become proud, For all of my talents by You are endowed; Nothing I have can I claim as my own— What mercy and grace in my life You have shown! —D. De Haan
True humility credits God for every success.

Read: 1 Samuel 15:10-23

When you were little in your own eyes, . . . did not the Lord anoint you king over Israel? —1 Samuel 15:17
Bible in a Year:
1 Samuel 14-16

"#854 was supposed to go to ALL!
Just sending a good laugh!"

Um, you do realize that ALL really isn't anybody, right?

I got a piece of mail addressed to: Our Valued Customer, or Current Occupant

Which means they appreciated my purchasing history with them so much that they were extending their awesome discount offers to any person who happened to move into my house.

Anyway, ALL doesn't really ping anyone. If you want to send a message to everyone on a particular list, you will have to assemble a list.

(A good place to keep that list is on your home page. That way, if you are away from your home computer, you still have access to it. So does everyone else, but that's a different issue.)

I didn’t have a lesson on my schedule today, Bob. Oh my, what shall I do?

You don’t really think that I don’t have a ping list, do you? I use it for more important things I post. For something silly like that joke, I didn’t think it was important enough to actually ping everyone. When I say “All” I actually am sending to the regulars at Amy’s. They know who they are!

I do understand though, that no one commented on the joke, which I thought was very funny with the Windows thing. Texting can get one in trouble instead of actually talking to someone on the phone! BTW, spell check just tried to tell me it should be testing, not texting...LOL!

By the way, I hope you’re on my ping list!! I will have to check it quickly and see and if you’re not, I will certainly add you, Bob.

I just checked my ping list and you’re not on it. May I put you on it? Its good to see you more lately on Amy’s and I always enjoy your great poetry!

Did you know I have a good friend called All? (Just kidding)!

You may put me on your ping list. I have the option to respond or not to any pings you may issue.

This is not indicative of favor or disfavor. I am not a reliable communicator. Even when I do respond, the results can be puzzling or confusingly complicated.

Not to worry. There is always madness in my method.
