Have you ever thought about that? How many times have you seen establishment types posit about how beautiful it would be to have a Romney/Rubio ticket? Even after Rubio has made it clear he isn't interested, I keep hearing it.
It can be summed up in one word: Hispanic.
The republicans have absolutely nothing in common with a conservative like Rubio, yet every time they mention his name, they always go off on a tangent about how he can win the hispanic vote. Because of his skin color?!?! Yep. The republicans are that superficial. It's that simple. They're in full pander mode.
A close second is obvious popularity, and third would be the 'Palin Effect'. The republicans are scared to death that we conservatives won't accept their boy Mitt, so they want a real conservative chosen as the Veep contender - more pandering from the republican establishment. But by far, the republicans just want to pander pander pander to hispanics, because they've been so hammered over the head by media liberals inside the beltway. As opposed to win them over with ideas and substance.
If the Establishment likes him because he has the right demographics and helps the party win elections, while he stays truly conservative, I can live with that.
But Romney at the top of the ticket cancels everything out and then some.
Besides. I think Rubio can smell a loser, and he isn’t in the habit of going for the #2 spot. When the time is right, he’ll go for the top slot.
For the same reasons that the Democratic establishment likes Obama.
1. Minority
2. First term Senate
3. No egregious record
Simple.
Yeah well, as it stand right now Rubio is much closer to Demint than any of those republicans in the establishment.
But what could be better for the republicans than a highly popular big government/establishment hispanic candidate? It would be a panderer's wet dream.
His skin color happens to be white, but aside from that, the GOP establishment does not like him and fought very hard to keep him from being the Senator from Florida.
If they are suggesting him as VP, it’s only an attempt to neutralize him.
Yeah, sure, the GOP Establishment would have gone with the transparent RINO for senator who had been the early favorite if they could have got away with it, but Rubio has the advantage of being Hispanic AND playing the get-along game with the Establishment. Remember, he’d been speaker of the FL house of representatives.
Particularly, he’s ‘Jeb Bush safe’ to the Establishment re: illegal immigration and amnesty.
I think 2 and 3 are actually the same thing. His obvious popularity with the base would have a Palinizing effect of (they hope) energizing the base so they don’t sit it out because once again they have forced a cold oatmeal candidate down our throat.
I won’t hold my nose and swallow. I’m not voting for Romney even if it means 4 more years of Obamination.
If Obama is re-elected, I can at least hope for continued gridlock to stall his worst legislative proposals. President Romney will be RINO neo-socialism with no gridlock.
No thanks, I’m not having any.
Many non-Romney conservatives have been touting Rubio for months, because he:
- Is informed and articulate on a wide range of critical issues,
- Hispanic,
- Represents Florida, a key swing state,
- is a solid conservative,
(sorry if you’re offended by someone not wanting to shoot all illegals)
- is young enough to be a great Presidential candidate for years to come.
Heck I despise the GOP “establishment” and I like Rubio.
A lot.
Stance on immigration/borders?
I’m sorry - not “stance.” Make that “true beliefs” and “likely future policies.”
He doesn’t play “get along.” He plays to win, and he has won a lot of things. And Jeb Bush was an excellent governor of Florida.
Because he isn’t running for higher office at this time. Once he does, expect them to find all kinds of faults.
Bingo! That's exactly what I thought as soon as I read the headline.
