January is not the most hospitable month of the year to be sure. If you're like me those cold dreary days are best spent curled up in a chair (for the guys that don't *do* curl -- sit there very manly) with a cup of tea (insert the manly beverage of your choice) and a stack of garden catalogs that you need a front-end loader to move (got you with the front-end loader, didn't I?).
I've got to hand it to the catalog people, the covers are exceptional this year and, by golly, with all of the $25 to $100 coupons right there on the front ... I saved $475 just walking in from the mailbox!
Your first five minutes spent thumbing through will tell you something, regardless of which catalog your choose: Prices. Are. Up. Must be that ol' supply-n-demand thing, because I choose to believe that MY favorite seed suppliers would never take advantage of a market that is growing by leaps and bounds as people discover that you can feed your family the highest quality foods and save money at the same time. Not to mention, you know exactly how your food was handled and by whom. It must be said -- produce from Mexico just doesn't have the same tropical appeal that it once did.
These are the catalogs I've received as of this morning. I've put these in the form of a link that you can take to that company, if you so desire. You can request a catalog of your own or, do what I do, which is peruse the paper catalog and then place an order online.

I was very glad that we had as much as we did planted in containers on the deck, or I would have missed the season altogether.

I just finished for the day in the garden, 5 hrs.. WOW, Never plant Lima beans, WOW are they hard to get off the fence they grew on.. Also all the squash is cleaned up and hauled off. WOW was that a lot of work, I sprayed down a gal of fake round up and now I have to wait for my Burpee order to get here. I just love Burpee gift cert for Christmas..
I tried to clean up one of the tomatoes that sorta survived but I made a mess of it. I think I will wait to clean up the other 4 for a week till I see how much of it is dead. the Burssle sprouts loved it and have no dammage that I can see.
Time for my afternoon nap.. My hands and arms are killing me after all that work. I have 3 crushed disks in my lower back so I have to get down on my butt to work on the garden. It’s great till I get stuck and have to grab my tools to get up or I have to craw to the fence and pull myself up.. Being disabled sucks but I am sorta liking being retired after climbing telephone poles for 34 years.. I think I am getting used to this “RETIRED” thing!

We had several inches of rain the last 2 weeks of December, which brought new water into our ponds and bayou. I’ve caught two messes of fish that have been filleted and put in the freezer.
Has anyone noticed the price of catfish in the stores????? Good grief, last night at Sam’s it was over $7/lb. Thank heaven I can catch bass, crappie and catfish to my heart’s content.”

I have been feeding these fish for some unknown reason, Time for some payback... They stand on their tails and chow down on all the floating food!
But curling up in a comfy chair with coffee or tea and reading glasses perched on the end of my nose, I can see better, and am more comfortable. Plus I can finish the catalog faster and my brain has a cohesive idea of the entire catalog.

Heirloom acres is another one I have had great luck with... and they respond well if there is a problem with your order!
So far I have Jung’s, Burpee, Gardener’s Supply, White Flower Farm, R. H. Shumway, and Chamblee’s Rose Nursery, and I’m trying to stay out of them. It’s hard, though.
I showed my husband Jung’s winter hardy peaches and nectarines, and he just growled, “No more projects,” and warned that the deer would eat them.
The current project (which just involves money) is replacing the 2 big, picture windows in the living and dining rooms of my house. I wrote the check the other day. It really hurt (to write the check), but they are going to be beautiful. We did the front door in November.

Peggy drove to Shreveport yesterday and arrived safely with no problems. She is staying at her sister’s home. They live way out in the country and her cellphone does not have service there - but they have a land line she can use. She plans on visiting her new store sometime today to introduce herself and then starts work tomorrow.
The weather here in East Central Mississippi is wonderful for Jan. 6th, sunny and temps are forecasted for the high 60’s. My digital outside thermometer says it is 71 right now. Sure feels good for a January day.
I do hope that all FReeper’s gardening dreams are fulfilled this spring.

This company has a great 2012 catalog that you can see online. It looks like they haven’t printed the 2012 catalog yet, but you can still order the 2011 catalog for $1 with a $2 coupon included.
There are lots of heirloom variety vegetables and herbs that might be hard to get elsewhere.
