Business Insider ^ | 12/13/2011 | Aimee Groth

LinkedIn just released the most overused words in its 85 million user profiles. They are:

1. Extensive experience

2. Innovative

3. Motivated

4. Results-oriented

5. Dynamic

6. Proven track record

7. Team player

8. Fast-paced

9. Problem solver

10. Entrepreneurial

The company says to completely eliminate these in your resumes or cover letters, and instead replace them with specific examples of how you're a problem solver, etc.

4. Results-oriented

A few years ago, if you did a Google search on "sample resume", and entry came up first that started with this phrase, and included a lot of the others. Since then, resumes have been coming in non-stop that are almost exact copies of that sample resume, with all the same buzzwords. People aren't very imaginative, so you can image HR these days is be in the mood to just throw away any document starting with these shopworn phrases.

It's really better to forget the resume and just find ways to get to know people on the inside. One "This guy's OK" from an insider counts a thousand times more than any document, no matter how much you paid to have it written.

Back in the silly days of 1999 when Internet company recruiters used to call me at random and ask for my resume, I would tell them there will be a $10 processing fee due in advance. :)

Come to think of it, it actually doesn't matter what one puts on a resume these days! I've worked in financial services since 1997, and a headhunter sent me a job spec the other day. When I responded that it sounded interesting, his reply was: "Sorry, they don't want to see anyone that graduated college before 2003." Classic.

Advice is much welcomed. I can only laugh at this stuff for so long.

Are there really any "slow-paced" workplaces out there in the 21st century?

Yes. Usually you are either just keeping things open until the busy season or you are on watch for something to happen.

Then everything becomes "fast paced"

“I work hard, I show up every day, and I am honest.”

Reminds me of a guy we hired a few years ago. Said he hadn't missed a day of work in 10 years. Sounded great to us, as his predecessor was a frequent victim of the Monday Flu. So we hired him - a few weeks later, I got a call, he'd been hospitalized and was off for 3 weeks!! At least he was able to PROVE he was sick!!

Yes, but I was referring only to places where work is done.

My bad. You plainly stated 'workplaces' in your original comment. I withdraw my question.

To differentiate yourself from the OWS crowd always add “I almost always wipe my butt”.

You forgot to add "And I shower once a week with out fail".

The resumes simply parrot back the pap that employment ads often say they are looking for.

I don’t see it nearly as much as I used to but I cringed every time I saw an ad saying they wanted someone who was “aggressive”. I seriously wished I could send Hulk Hogan in to interview with such a company, grab the interviewer by the lapels and ask “Am I aggressive enough to get the job? When do I start?”

I joined LinkedIn for about 5 minutes.

The very second I signed up, I was bombed with requests. Just about every person that I'd ever sat across the table from at a meeting, asked me for references, a job, or "Can you just take one minute to review my resume?".

Took me a couple of months to get myself untangled from the site, and I still get spammed from it consistently.

LinkedIn rivals FaceBook as the most annoying time-suck on the planet, IMHO.

I find that places that describe themselves as “fast-paced” are terribly disorganized, have no idea what direction to go in, are in general, just reacting to everything that comes their way.
