LinkedIn just released the most overused words in its 85 million user profiles. They are:

1. Extensive experience

2. Innovative

3. Motivated

4. Results-oriented

5. Dynamic

6. Proven track record

7. Team player

8. Fast-paced

9. Problem solver

10. Entrepreneurial

The company says to completely eliminate these in your resumes or cover letters, and instead replace them with specific examples of how you're a problem solver, etc.

I’ve used both of these training videos to help me find a job. No luck yet, but I’m not giving up!

This presumes that your resume is going to get read by a human at all, instead of just ash-canned by a computer. Which is often what happens now.

If the company just throws 90% or resumes away, they end up with 100% lucky candidates.

If the company just throws 90% of the resumes away, they end up with lucky candidates 100% of the time. If one is not good, being lucky can help a lot.

Good question. If you’re in a manufacturing environment, it’s all about maximizing throughput through lean process management these days, which pretty much insures a fast pace. People on commissions are often among the busiest people - and have to be if they want to survive. On the other hand, the only sizable group that I know of still working on a “billable hours” basis are corporate lawyers - and many of them work 80- to 120-hour weeks.

To differentiate yourself from the OWS crowd always add “I almost always wipe my butt”.

I had a resume from a guy whose career objective, the boldfaced top line of his resume was...

"I want to be an IT"

He didn't get the job, but his resume left a lasting impression. Still gets joked about here in the dept, years later.

I have used:

Walks on water on even numbered days.

Former Policy Adviser to God.

Then I add, “Just put those in to see if someone actually reads this resume”

Seriously, I got one job by listing under Accomplishments, “Invented revolutionary new weapon system for the Gulf War which was described by our Chief Operating Officer as “One of the most brilliant ideas I ever heard””.

Of course, when I got to the interview I had to tell them that they did not have the right security clearance to hear about the weapon system.

Are there really any "slow-paced" workplaces out there in the 21st century?

Ever been to a government office?

So, some bimbo at LinkedIn decides this and we should listen? Yeah, as though that bimbo is so successful.

civil servants.

Some people might consider that term to be a non-sequitur. Or a double falsehood.

Yes, but I was referring only to places where work is done.
