Size and weight create trade off situations on recoil and manageability.

The pistol that I like the best is the CZ 75B 40S&W but it is a full sized battlefield pistol, you aren't going you conceal it easily.

Even this fullsize pistol has a hefty recoil , but its a flat peppy hot shooter and it melds to my hand.

We just missed a great deal on surplus High power brownings.

Aim had the, even the alloy framed ones for like $450

They are all gone now.

I once had a Walther P-4 which looks just like a P-38 (or P-1) but the slide was totally different inside.

I then had a P-5 which was mechanically similar to the P-4 but had a much more modern look and a barrel which was, I think only 3.5 inches which is too short imo.

I will say the P-5 was a good shooter tho.

Took my PM9 out for a stroll this morning.

Before letting my cats out I like to walk around the place to check for coyote & lion tracks or sign.

Have a few target areas set up and fire off a few rounds as I go just to stay in shape & also to scare the critters away.

When I get to the house the cats are waiting wide-eyed at the door, almost like bird dogs.

Yep, some fine guns (eventually) do need a break-in period, and there is nothing wrong with this, in that it means the owner (or her husband) at least has put a few boxes through it, and will have faith that it will work.

Or, you can just buy a Glock or an Xd, and just know it will work from the first mag loaded.

Don’t take that as a knock against Kahrs, or 1911. They are indeed fine....once broken in.

We all want the luger, but the P38 is a good shooter, if a bit ugly and utilitarian.

Ever fired a Kahr MK40? I bet it is worse. At least the polymer frame on the P45 has *some* give. The MK40 just beats the web between your thumb and forefinger.

I’m not sure I’ve ever fired 50 rounds at once. Usually I empty the ready mags (2), one or two sets of reloads, and that’s about it.

I’m about to buy a Universal .30 caliber M1 Carbine as an extra “sport utility rifle” for my family arsenal. $200.

Any thoughts?

Daddy brought home a Luger, a P-38 and an Austo-Hungarian .32 from WWII. He sold the .32 to my Great Uncle and the Luger to Daddy’s First Cousin who was also a Florida Golden Gloves Boxing Champ. Never heard what happened to the P-38.

At Daddy’s funeral, I asked the Cousin if he still had the Luger but he had sold it years before. He did say that if he still had it, he would have given it to me. He did tell me that he once told Daddy that it was not very accurate. Daddy then took the Luger and proceeded to shoot a tiny group with it.

I still remember my Father killing a gator in Otter Pond near where our farm was. The range must have been close to 40 yards and he only fired the Luger once. I was maybe 4 years old.

I’ve often thought about getting one just for the historical coolness factor, but never got around to it. At that price, go for it! Just stock up on ammo, it’s not that readily available.

Just thinking about it, you might consider something with ammunition commonality with something else in the arsenal. Might be worth paying a little more for the weapon, for that.

If it is a good working gun then $200 sounds like a steal to me. They are not supposed to be as good as the U.S. military ones but probably still a good gun.

I just noticed we posted during the exact same second.

I had a Ruger Blackhawk in .30 carbine back around 1987. Every time I fired it, the muzzle blast would give me a new hairdo.

Now that S/W 40 Cal is a great gun, looks like a weapon acts like a weapon, not like the ones now produced that look like a bar of soap. My favorite is a model 29 S/W in 44 special caliber.Same Keith Semi Wad cutter.I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

While they still have them, order an Iver Johnson complete bolt from Numerich. That and the bolt carrier/slide are the weakest links on a Universal. I have one on which I placed the Iver Johnson (heat treated parts, the original Univeral ones were not and broke) bolt and a pistol grip collapsible stock (for a Mossberg 20 gage, which I fitted to the wooden stock minus the butt stock). Shots like adream and the new Korean 30 round mags work just fine.
