Risky Business

December 10, 2011

On some of the Christmas cards you will receive this year, no doubt there will be a man standing in the background looking over the shoulder of Mary, who is prominently displayed caring for the baby Jesus. His name is Joseph. And after the nativity narratives, he isn’t heard from much again. If we didn’t know better, we would think Joseph was an insignificant bystander or, at best, a mere necessity to undergird Jesus’ claim to the throne of David.

But, in fact, the role that Joseph played was strategically important. If he had disobeyed the angel’s command to take Mary as his wife (Matt. 1:20), he would have, from a human perspective, put the entire mission of Jesus at risk. Taking Mary as his wife was a risky assignment. Public perception that he was the baby’s father put him in serious violation of Jewish law and made him a public disgrace. Yet today all of us are thankful that he was willing to risk his reputation to participate in and facilitate God’s unfolding drama.

Most of us are insignificant compared to the major players in this world. But all of us are called to obey. Who knows what God has in store when we are willing to surrender to God’s will—even when it puts us at risk!

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey. —Sammis

It’s no small thing to trust and obey.

Read: Matthew 1:18-25

Then Joseph . . . did as the angel of the Lord commanded him. —Matthew 1:24

Thanks so much for the prayers. At the recital I was able to do fine until just shortly after the duet, and so the duet went great.

*hugs*

A Difficult Season

This is a most difficult season,
We've traveled a distance this year.
I'm growing increasingly worried,
My dear wife and I are in fear.

Our journey has been quite a hard one,
And others have passed us in haste,
If we are to find some comfort,
We haven't a moment to waste.

But she could give birth any minute,
This motion is not a good thing.
We'll need to rest long when we get there,
And we'll need all the coin we can bring.

This traveling back to my hometown,
Means that I and my child will share,
This place of birth and our kinship,
With others who dwell about there.

The town is decidedly crowded,
There's not a room to be had.
The innkeeper lets us take shelter,
In a stable nearby. It's not bad.

The earthy smells are a comfort,
Somewhat like a scent of new wood,
As a carpenter, I know I'll rest easy,
If my wife will agree that it's good.

I would think it could be a bit festive,
With a pine bough to sweeten the air,
And a candle or lamp, to keep out the night damp,
But I sit on the straw and just stare.

For beyond the smoke of our camp-fires,
I can see a bright star in the sky,
The heavens may have their works revealed,
But I cannot spare them my eye.

For my wife is finding comfort,
In the straw of our rude little space,
And so, like it or not, I'm preparing,
To welcome our child in this place.

So a food trough becomes a first cradle,
As he comfortably makes it his own,
All swaddled about, with his face shining out,
He can reign like a king on his throne.

When I get to a place I can work at,
I'll make a good cradle, and sound,
A carpenter's son shouldn't have to accept,
Some rough sticks in a bad part of town.

I laughed and could see myself in some of the lines. Thank you, for posting the poem.

In the paper this morning there is an article regarding a GOLD COIN DROPPED IN THE SALVATION ARMY KETTLE. Worth a thousand dollars! What a joy, the gift was anonymous, the giver did a very good deed. God smiled to see.

It is a wonderful feeling to do a good deed anonymously.

It is better to give than receive.

Time
It is always NOW!
we use it as a measure,
it keeps us on track,
whether work or pleasure
it isn’t coming back

Gone with the wind
gone as a dream,...
behind the scenes...
there is more going on
than what is seen ...

The mind loves a mystery ...
Maybe that it why I love History.

Sorry I haven't been here today. My son came to help me
decorate some, put the tree up, etc. and now I'm doing a
little lunch. I will be here when I can, everyone.

One of the many things I love about Christmas is the music. This is one of my many favorite songs. Maybe I am being picky, but I do not like commercials using Christmas songs, the words twisted to sell their products.

My DIL came by to visit and brought a gift of flowers for the dining table.
Her sister ‘s daughter is having a baby..She lives in New York..so they had a Skye shower luncheon..Gifts were sent to the mother to be..and she opened them while her friends all gathered for lunch here..They could all see each other via Skye.Modern technology is wonderful.
I got a lovely plate of leftovers..hot chicken salad and cookies too pretty to eat..but I am eating them..LOL

Glad you had some help with Christmas decorating, jaycee.
