Newt Gingrich has taken the lead in PPP's national polling. He's at 28% to 25% for Herman Cain and 18% for Mitt Romney. The rest of the Republican field is increasingly looking like a bunch of also rans: Rick Perry is at 6%, Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul at 5%, Jon Huntsman at 3%, and Gary Johnson and Rick Santorum each at 1%.

I am starting to get real uneasy about 2012. Here we have probably the most flawed incumbent in the history of the Republic, and Gingrich is the best we can run against him?
I’m also really pissed @ Mitch Daniels, Haley Barbour, Chris Christie, and yes, Sarah too, for staying on the sidelines.
BS
The MSM has got 2 whole months to destroy Gingrich. And unlike the lies they’ve tried to smear Cain with, there’s actual baggage with Gingrich.
I know what you people are thinking. That Newt’s going to take Obama behind the woodshed in the 3 debates next year? Oh really, you mean the same way he took John Kerry behind the woodshed in a debate on climate change?

Newt has the same problem as Romney, a lack of trust.
The poll is on the sited PPP website.

thanks.
Long way to go. Real test is fund raising. Last I heard Cain is sustsaining the momentum he enjoyed last week when conservatives collectively and loudly gave the finger to the RINO and demrat faux scandal. More importantly they sent him lots of money.
Got a new accuser this week. I have to ante up to Cain again. I have pledged to donate each time Cain’s opponents invent a new “witness”.
The scandal ploy failed. Now their going back to the oucome based poll ploy. On to it. Not impressed.

We are running out of people on any of those items you listed”
That is precisely the problem.
We can all moan about how there is not this or that in this field.
But there are only a few realistic non-Romney choices left now. Strangely, Newt is one of them.
Im also really pissed @ Mitch Daniels, Haley Barbour, Chris Christie, and yes, Sarah too, for staying on the sidelines.”
Don’t forget Jindal, John Thune and probably many others....

Would much prefer Cain/Huck 12 ..with Newt as Press Secretary.

Exactly. The GOP and the MSM want Romney, but they would also love Newt. The only hope we have of a conservative winning the election is to nominate Cain.
Sue me.
What I think is that Republicans
1.HAVE TO get behind a legitimate candidate and do it QUICKLY
2. THAT candidate will either be CAIN, ROMNEY or GINGRICH.
3.The MSM has made it clear FOR TWO YEARS, through spin with varying degress of subtlety, that ROMNEY is their candidate.
4. The Left has ALSO made it clear that Romney is their candidate, for the seemingly contradictory reasons that
he’s the most “moderate” and also doesn’t offer enough of a
contrast to Obama to make much of a difference. This is a big gamble on their part, but you can see their reasoning.
5. NO ONE will win the nomination without the Tea Party vote, and so far Cain is the only one who’s captured that,
his “sexual scandals” notwithstanding.
6. Everyone must also recognize by now that the Left is trading on the “baggage” both Gingrich and Cain carry is
enough to render them “unelectable”. This fits perfectly into the ongoing objective of making Romney the nominee.
7. NOBODY seems to have learned the lessons of the last election , which was, regardless of defeats, a huge success for this vast new constituency known as the Tea Party.
Cain’s unprecedented showing so far is owing precisely to this constituency, even as it looks like his “baggage” has been engineered to make him drop in the polls.
8. A Romney victory in primaries will create as much chaos
(though strictly of a political sort) in the Body Politic
as Obama being elected to the Presidency.
9. I have NO substantial idea how Romney could win the primaries except through a careful courting of “Independents” and/or disgruntled Obama voters looking
for someone to put a new faxe on what will basically be a continuation of sorts of Obama’s policies. Obama himself has been thoroughly discredited.
10. Last but not least, everyone also recognizes that Gingrich as a debater is what’s needed to destroy Obama.
He is the ONLY one confident and well-equipped enough to do that. He’s also the ONLY one calling for a whole series of serious debates which are designed to do just htat.
He will prove to be the ANTI-Obama if he can pull it off:
answering all the pseudo-idealistic piffle that got Obama elected, with real-world policy expertise.
Amen
A write in. If this country needs to go to hell and back to recover it’s original glory as a Republic, so be it.
I have no problem standing on the front lines.
I love the kinder, gentler version of you. =)
Then you need to write in “none” or “no author”.
Otherwise, it’s just stealing.
No Newt is good Newt.
Newt is a smart man, but he’s a one-worlder, and still believes in AGW.
He is also a beltway insider.
If he were sincere, which I don’t think he is, he could get a lot done.
He is just being put up by the elites to divide the conservative vote.
IMO, Newt stands no chance of winning the election.
Neither does Mitt.
I believe that’s the plan handed down from the elites.
The Republicans are determined to run another loser in the next election.
Only the nasty claims, founded or not, will be operative and the 'seriousness' of the charges will prevail.
Meanwhile, Romney will go untouched [save the MormonISM zealots here at FR]......
