John Sandford's Certain Prey: Mark Harmon as Lucas Davenport

Posted on 11/05/2011 6:59:21 PM PDT by EveningStar

I never pictured Mark Harmon as Lucas Davenport but I guess I'm going to find out how it works out.

Harmon stars as the antihero super-cop in John Sandford’s Certain Prey premiering tomorrow night, November 6, on the USA network

You can read the review by Mike Hale of The New York Times here: Even With a Fancier Car, Mark Harmon Can Still Solve Crimes

I enjoyed Dirty White Boys immensely.

My favorite is probably Pale Horse Coming. It was interesting and fun trying to guess who the characters were in real world.

Least favorite was 47th Samurai. Bob Lee with a sword? Didn’t work for me.

Lastly, have you ever been to Blue Eye, Arkansas? It’s a very small run-down collection of buildings that straddle the MO/AR border. Kinda neat, but not in the western Arkansas mountains as portrayed in the books. It was only a few miles from where my folks used to live in Kimberling City, MO.

...I thought I would need to find the first Child book to get the whole 'backgound story' of why he was such a loner....(which I intend to read anyway) ..so I guess The Affair is a prequel, eh.

I'd love to hear magritte's opinion, but I don't think you're well served by reading The Affair first. Part of the delight in reading the Affair is that you've come to appreciate this eccentric character through more than a dozen books. You have a good understanding of him . . . but you don't really know why he was selected to be downsized from the military. You don't really understand why he buys clothing and wears it for a couple of days, then discards it. You don't know really know why he, in Australian terms, is on a permanent 'walkabout' across the United States (with a few brief stops).

I think those pleasant 'disclosures' in The Affair would lose 98% of their meaning if you hadn't already accepted the character, and come to know him. It would be like finding out your parents were Santa Claus . . . before you enjoyed your first Christmas.

I’ve been reading the Reachers since they first came out, so I ran and looked at some of the titles and looked at it as if I had not read the them and I think you’re right. Thor and Flynn did the same kind of thing in the middle of their series and I took it for granted how much the “prequels” made sense, but only because I was already immersed in the worlds.

I agree with Scoutmaster: Go with Killing Floor first.

Thanks for the reminder S. When looking at a series to recommend, look at it like you are reading them for the first time...

If I recall you were perturbed about the trashing of the Cain accusing women as I was. It’s a disturbing trend on FR recently...

That's it.

I starting becoming uncomfortable with FR 'flash mobs' during and after the 2011 Gibson Guitar raid. No matter what topic comes up on FR, there are people who know more about it than me. On most subjects, we have some dead-on experts. The Gibson situation was literally a subject on which I knew an extraordinary amount, from inside sources and from legal documents, as a 40-year-guitar collector who has the personal phone numbers of industry executives, and as a lawyer who has copies of all of the legal documents from the 2009 and 2011 raids. And facts from legitimate sources (such as www.opensecrets.org on political donations, not from some blog). But the stampede was on and if I dared to post a fact, even one with a hyperlink to a source, I was accused of being a competitor of Gibson, a government lawyer, or a liar. Or simply ignored by people who wanted to repeat the mob's lies. Statements made by Gibson is a press release were fact; statements made by Gibson under oath in court documents were disruptive if I brought them up.

After that, I started to be more aware of certain topics where large numbers of FR members simply acted like a mob. The manner in which the women were trashed bothered me. And I'm a Cain supporter.

It was far-fetched, to say the least. Bob Lee needs to stick with being a sniper.

I've read that the name "Blue Eye" was borrowed from an Arkansas town, but that the Swagger's fictional "Blue Eye" is based on Mena, Arkansas, in Polk, County.

I don't remember how I happened upon the first Child book at the bookstore...

..but it was 61 hours...(however I figured out who the 'killer' was about midway)..

..but I was so gobsmacked by the easy narrative....the strong & infinitely unique man that is Reacher....and the excellent portrayal of all the characters, the place, the feel....

..I was instantly smitten.....just got lost in the book.

My next was Worth Dying For....

..then One Shot--(didn't see that one coming!).

...Just finished Bad Luck and Trouble......and I also have lined up Gone Tomorrow and Nothing to Lose

If you've never read Daniel Silva books about Gabriel Allon (Israeli spy)...I highly recommend the series!!!!!!

The Preston/Child Pendergast series had its moments (Still Life with Crows being a favorite), but I lost a bit of interest in the last 2. Indeed, Pendergast lost his veneer of mysterious agent and went boilerplate. I’ll give it one more shot.

We're on the same page. That's what I meant when I said the books had dropped off when Pendergast when into the vengeance mode (over his wife). They became boilerplate. Actually, once his brother appeared, the books went a little (here, I'm doing my best Seinfeld "Kramer" hand motion) "out there."

It's interesting that the small-town goth from Still Life reappears in the latest book, although she served such a small role that her appearance was wasted, in my opinion, and her mature character was shallow.

Wasn’t too happy with the way Davenport breaks the law in several instances that would have prevented prosecution in this case. It didn’t ring true to the books

Respectfully, there are multiple instances in the books where Davenport will enter a suspect's house before there is a search warrant to gather information that will help him in the investigation, but that can't be used as evidence. The finding - then replacing and 'finding' - the .22 round last night is in the book.

Remember that Lucas was still "Chief Davenport" last night. Soon after, he leaves the police and goes to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension as a political appointee specifically because he doesn't follow rules required from a policeman. If I remember, the final straw was beating up "Randy," the pimp who church-keyed the prostitute who was one of Davenport's snitches.

Good morning...I’ve met Lee Child a few times, and still occasionally correspond with him. I stumbled across the first Reacher novel quite by accident..it hadn’t yet takem off and become a hit..and really enjoyed it..in the cover blurb, it mentioned his website..I was curious..and saw that he then lived in Pound Ridge, the next town over from Chappaqua, where I lived at the time. He had one procedural error in the book about the USSS, so I sent him a note, told him I liked the book, and mentioned the mistake. He repleid..we met a few weeks later at a local author’s night, and went to lunch. He’s a really nice guy...and totally amazed at his success..

What did you think of the movie?

Unfortunately, I can remember very little of the book and it’s been quite a while since I’ve read a Lucas Davenport book.

Overall, my wife and I liked the movie. From what little I remember of the book, the Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany fit the role of hitwoman Clara Rinker pretty well.

Guenevere, Thanks for explaining Virgil Flowers to those who assumed I was being disrespectful.

I have read many of the same authors as you and really enjoy Thor, he is may favorite at this time.

I am not always on FR because I have to work to be a responsible adult. MLS

lol, Glad I could help.

My husband reads Sandford and even listens to him on 'book on tape or cd' on the way to work...

..the little I've heard, he can get 'colorful'...

But we taped last night's 'Certain Prey' (I'm a fan of Mark Harmon)....so now I'll get to see a Sandford movie.

I have read all of Flynn's books (except the latest) and all of Thor's books (except one extreme departure that I couldn't finish...The Athena Project)....

I have read all of Silva's books....and now working on Connelly and Child.

Lord, Athena Project stunk soooooooooo bad...bad idea for a spinoff, hope it dies on the vine...

The newest Vince Flynn got pushed back to February...totally bummed...American Assassin is a prequel book like “The Affair”...a very good read...

I had to keep turning to the front of the book to make sure I was still reading Thor!!!!.....It's like an out of body experience....not a Thor book at all....

..awful iccky book!----If that was the first one I'd read, I would never have read another.

Flynn's book got pushed back, I imagine, because he is tired and ill....you know he's fighting prostate cancer.

Mar mar, for whatever reason you could not address me simply & immediately which is too bad because this whole thing could have been wrapped up jovially. Instead a bunch of other people stepped in for you.

The very odd comment about you working? Ummmm, me too and I assume a whole lot of other posters. There is nothing worse than a man doing the whole cry me a river routine. Work is why I am posting at 5:22 this morning.

The Godfather was the only adaptation from book to screen that was good. The author of the book I believe either wrote the screen play or directed it...don't remember which, but it followed the book just about exactly...

Going with westerns Louis Lamour books transfered pretty good to the big screen..Most book to screen are usually a disappointment to those that read the book...Aunty Mame also came off pretty good to the big screen. I think it was a broadway play (not too sure). Gypsy also made it from broadway to screen. Interesting that Rosaline Russell make both films.

I didn't get back to FR for a few days, I am not on every day, that is why you didn't get an answer. I thought since you brought up John Sandford, you had read the rest of the novels and would know about Virgil Flowers.
