Cantor: Republicans agree there is 'too much income disparity' By Julian Pecquet - 10/16/11 11:15 AM ET

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said repeatedly Sunday that Republicans agree that too few people control too much wealth in America.

"We know in this country right now that there is a complaint about folks at the top end of the income scales, that they make too much and too many don't make enough," Cantor said during an appearance on Fox News Sunday, toning down his earlier criticism of the Occupy Wall Street protests.

"We need to encourage folks at the top of the income scale to actually put their money their work to create more jobs so we can see a closing of the gap," he added.

Personally I’m concerned with the income disparity between the people and congressmen.

Sure, if he means America-hating traitors like Soros.

Honestly, you can agree on a problem (income disparity) without agreeing on a solution (I doubt Cantor feels the solution is welfare payments).

Cantor should, however, qualify this statement with something like “improving our overall economy through reducing regulation, spending, and taxes will do far more to address that disparity than any government program, since, more people will be able to become rich.”

Yes! and an idiot to boot. Speaking of boots. I believe this conversation by Cantor is an open invitation to drop kick this guy from any leadership position in the Republican Party.

Doesn’t the Party do any vetting of it’s people? How about a little indoctrination or at least a right wing play book (called the Constitution in other circles) for these idiots to read.

"We need to encourage folks at the top of the income scale to actually put their money their work to create more jobs so we can see a closing of the gap," he added.

This doesn't sound so bad, If you assume he means reducing the barriers to job creation. Which is probably what he was getting at (I'll give him the benefit of the doubt), although he didn't say it that well.

Refusing to admit that a majority share this concern is the kind of thing that the media can use to say the GOP is "out of touch" with the concerns of regular people. By acknowledging it, it nips that in the bud. Now, to redeem himself, he needs to say what the solution is, which, of course would be things like a simpler tax code, fewer regulations, etc. etc. etc.

I don't click on links to unsafe websites like The Hill so can somebody tell me if Cantor went on to explain what sort of "encouragement" he was talking about?

If it was something like removing some or all of the onerous regulations businesses are required to put up with, he has my support.

If not, I'd prefer he close his own gap.

While I am interested in seeing the poor and middle class be better off economically, the concept of “closing the gap” completely misses the mark.

I’d be thrilled if the “gap” increased widely because the income of the highest earners quadrupled, while the income of the lower and middle class merely doubled.

On the other hand, if the “gap” was narrowed because billionaires lost 75% of their wealth while the lower and middle classes “only” declined 20% it would be a disaster. The “gap” would be greatly narrowed, but everyone would be worse off.

He's an imbecile at best. The “wealth gap” is arbitrary bs. It's not as if there was one pile of money and a few guys grabbed most of it, yet that's essentially what you have to believe to see the “wealth gap” is a problem that needs fixing. Idiots.

A good reason why so few people control so much wealth is that the few are one ones who created that wealth. If it weren't for them, we'd all be a lot poorer

“Where does he get the idea that most Republicans agree?”

You really need to consider the possibility that he is correct. Certainly the results of the nominating process in 48,52,56,60,68,72,76,88,92,96,00,04, and 08 suggest that he is.

"put their money their to work to create more jobs".

"We need to encourage folks at the top of the income scale to actually put their money their work to create more jobs so we can see a closing of the gap," he added.

What's their incentive? Is he going to ensure ObamaCare is repealed? What about the tax system in its current state? Hell, what about the rates? What about this "Super Committee" and the left's hard charge to raise taxes on the folks at the "top of the income scale"?

What a stupid, f'in statement. Why didn't he at least stand there and say, "Look I know we've made it VERY difficult over the years to grow businesses and create wealth. We agree that you people have too much money, and we want to ensure it's spread around. However, that shouldn't stop you from putting that money to work and help the poor people of America. By the way, we're not going to change our minds due to simple elections. Get with the program."

At least that would've been honest.
