'I am really scared': Family lost in corn maze calls 911 for help

A Massachusetts family got the Halloween scare of a lifetime by getting lost inside a dark and creepy Salem-area corn maze and had to call 911 for rescue.

Danvers police say they got a call of distress from a mother of two about 6:32 p.m. Monday. The woman alerted the 911 operator of their situation in the Connors Farm in Danvers, a short distance from Salem...

He said a Danvers police with a tracking dog quickly plunged into the depths of the maze with a farm manager to search for the disoriented dad, mom and two young kids.

Within a minute or so upon arrival, the police officer located the family. The family didn't realize they had almost made their way out; they were just 25 feet from the street, Connors said.

Smokes! With all that soft maple, you’d think that there would be some around. Looks to me to be a nice stand of soft maple there. Why do I know that? Because if it were hard maple, you wouldnt see that straight of trees and more clumps. Unless its that much different there than here.

That soft maple makes for some real good hunting ground..deer and grouse. Not as good as Aspen, but I tell you that grouse really like those types of stands.

We dont cut hemlock up here much anymore unless there are a lot around. The deer like to shelter under them. Its actually about 5 to 10 degrees warmer under them in the cold.

"I’ve gotten whacked pretty good in the forehead by running into a dry ear of field corn hanging out from a row."

Ouch! That could hurt.

If it were my property I’d be thinning them out some so they would grow.

I used to work for Hardwoods of Michigan in Clinton. I saw some beautiful and high dollar lumber come through there. I have a 2x10 plank of white maple that I laid on the ground over a small creek in my yard. Its been there better than 15 years now and is still rock solid.

Not yet Creek, not yet. Unless they would want to mark it and sell some for firewood. For commercial thinning its still a tad small. Ten more years. Then comes the question if there is a good market for pulpwood/firewood down there. My guess is that it would yield about 10 cords per acre in ten years in a proper thinning. Then, after the thinning, the wooden nickles will grow fast.

“How stupid and uselss dose a man have to be to call 911 because he’s ‘lost’ in a corn maze????”

A man didn’t call; he had his wife do it. Maybe even more pathetic.

My older daughter is that way. She got it from her father. I know she didn’t get it from me. I have trouble telling which end of the mall I’m in and which way I’m supposed to be headed. I refer to it as being “directionally challenged.” Daughter calls it not able to navigate my way out of a brown paper bag.

How come you can have one and not the other? I have the time thing. I always know what time it is. I never set an alarm clock, just wake up at the time I want and know what time it is. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I know what time it is. But, the whole direction thing is a complete mystery to me.

Aw.....;D

I probably got it from my dad, too.

He’d go down to Harrisonburg VA to hunt every year and there’s *nothing* in those mountains to help you, if you get “turned around”.

One year he did have trouble and said “I never got lost...I just got powerful confused for a while.”

The bad thing [for me, anyway] was that he’d take *my* horse with him.

I was always so glad and relieved to see ol’ Reb when he got home....oh...and dad, too.

I don’t know.
Maybe they’re two totally separate things.

Do you ever experience that [really annoying] phenomenon of -always- just happening to look up at the clock/VCR/whatever and seeing “1:11”, “2:22”, “3:33”, “4:44”, “5:55”, “11:11” or “12:12”?

That stuff drove me *nuts* for decades and now they’re actually writing books about it.

Punch “11:11” into Google and watch what comes up.

OK, now that’s funny right there!

Saw him play with The New Barbarians about 30 years ago, and we were right up against the stage (back in the day of “festival seating”). Keith was maybe 10’-12’ from us for most of the show, and looked like death warmed over back then!

And that’s why they use formaldehyde to preserve things instead of alcohol.
