The Democratic Partys rare loss of a congressional seat in its urban heartland Tuesday, accompanied by a blowout defeat in a Nevada special election, marked the latest in a string of demoralizing setbacks that threatened to deepen the partys crisis of confidence and raise concerns about President Barack Obamas political fortunes.
In New York, Bob Turner(R) soundly defeated Democrat David Weprin in a House contest that in the view of party leaders, at least featured an anemic urban machine, distracted labor unions, and disloyal voters. In Nevada, a consequential state for the presidents re-election strategy, Democrats suffered a runaway loss rooted in a weak showing in Renos Washoe County, a key bellwether.
Even before the polls closed, the recriminations something short of panic, and considerably more than mere grumbling had begun. On a high-level campaign conference call Tuesday afternoon, Democratic donors and strategists commiserated over their disappointment in Obama. A source on the call described the mood as awful.
People feel betrayed, disappointed, furious, disgusted, hopeless, said the source.
Less expansive but equally telling were the remarks of House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, who in a conversation with reporters Tuesday morning said bluntly that Obama would take some blame for the two special election losses.
I think every election reflects on the person in charge, but do I think it is an overall statement on the president alone? No, said Hoyer. Do I think it will be interpreted as being a statement on Obama? Thats probably correct.
A senior Hill Democratic aide was more direct in attempting to explain the New York loss: The approval ratings for the guy at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue cratered.
A Turner consultant, Steve Goldberg, validated that assessment: It was all Obama not even a thought of anything else.

I think you could say that some people are suffering from one of the worst things a person realizes has happened to them, BEING PLAYED FOR A SUCKER!
In New York, Bob Turner(R) soundly defeated Democrat David Weprin in a House contest that -- in the view of party leaders, at least -- featured an anemic urban machine, distracted labor unions, and disloyal voters. In Nevada, a consequential state for the president's re-election strategy, Democrats suffered a runaway loss rooted in a weak showing in Reno's Washoe County, a key bellwether. In domestic politics, Zero doesn't care about anyone who isn't one of Holder's People. The Demwits figured this out a while back, but are stuck with it and stuck with him, unless they run independent or switch parties. I'd be very surprised if the next successful launch of a political party *didn't* come from a DP schism, and be made entirely out of old-line incumbent Demwits.
If Republicans will fight for it the district can stay.
In ‘10, the Brooklyn portion of Nadler’s 8th district voted Democrat by only 53-47 (the Manhattan portion was 84-16 Dem).
In the 9th district, the Brooklyn portion was 52% Dem while the Queens portion was 65% Dem.
With 449 of 512 precincts reporting, the Brooklyn portion has voted 67% R while the Queens portion has voted 51% D. Turnout appears to be around 62% what it was for the ‘10 general.
Anyway, Turner does live in the Brooklyn portion. The Brooklyn 8th and 9th total about 500K residents - a seat in ‘12 will be 717K.
Now the cost of keeping Turner’s seat may be keeping Hochul’s seat also. The way I see that happening is that Hochul gets Slaughter’s seat, and Slaughter’s seat, instead of stretching from Rochester to Buffalo, stretches from Rochester to Syracuse or Ithaca.
For example, here are some choice quotes from dummy land where libs are trying to work this out:
all I have to say...is that voters in NY09 are f***ing stupid and will believe any lie you tell them...f*** you all! another vote in the House to get rid of SS, Medicare, etc...F*** YOU ALL!
idiots in the district and idiots in the dem party leadership.
Dems stayed home because of a shi**y candidate... why does this sound familiar...
Something is terribly wrong. Either the republicans are cheating or we have completely lost the information war.
I hope everyone here that wanted Weiner to step down is satisfied.
They found out yesterday who the Tea Party is. The American people. Class warfare and the race card hand has been overplayed to the extent that even moderates are sick of it.
Not necessarily. There had been a deal that the Dems would sacrifice a seat downstate and the Repubs one upstate. This win upsets that cart.
In Weiner’s ex-district, Democrats account for a majority of voters and outnumber Republicans 3-to-1. Democrats have held that seat for 90 years.
Dem Weprins campaign, the Democratic Party and unions poured in more than $1.5 million to retain the seat held by Dem heavyweights Schumer and Ferraro.
Now it seems the party is over....thank you Obama.
But in the back of their minds....People feel betrayed, disappointed, furious, disgusted, hopeless, said the source.
Forget the rest they are just excuses.
So true. If we get a super majority, we must overwhelm the Left. Pass so much, so fast, they cannot muster the forces to effectively resist. We need an economic and political BIG BANG. Disestablish DOE, EPA, get so-called entitlements under control, require congressional approval of all regulations, and disestablish some inferior courts to clear out the Marxist judges.
Chucky was Wiener's Mentor. I want to know is Chucky a freakazoid like Wiener was. Also, he is in for 6 yrs, via 2010 re-election but ole' Chucky must be looking over his shoulder now...
Democrats are not learning a thing, they are still following Obama around like little puppies.
Jumping when he says jump.
I think they’re gonna be jumping off a cliff with him in 2012.
Maka'da wine!!!
Yes, Turner in NY was/is Tea Party
Unless the resulting Congress is Tea Party next year....won’t make much difference.
Yep, I read Turner openly stated he was for Tea Party ideas and would take them to Washington. So much for the Tea Party being hated
they’re gonna put their foot on the gas because they know they only have 16 months to do what the Soviets could never do.
On the contrary, the polls are correct. People don't like the House but, in general, they like their Congressman. They would have to since they tend to reelect them 90% of the time.
But your point is still valid - polls of the popularity of the House are meaningless since they give you no help in predicting the outcome of elections.
This is even more important than Republicans V Democrats here:
“....Turner, 70, a retired cable TV executive who has never served in elective office, defeated Democratic State Assemblyman David Weprin, 55, who has two decades of experience in public service...”
Doggoned right. A businessman kicks a career politician out of office!
