A historic site's true purpose may have been revealed -- as an Iron Age boozer.

Experts believe that 4600 years ago, thirsty natives may have been enjoying a pie and pint at Jarlshof in Shetland.

...

And a dozen or so quernstones -- for grinding barley -- indicate it may have served as both a drinking den and a bakery.

...

It contains remains dating from 2500 BC up to the 17th century.

...

The building has a house next door which has a large souterrain -- which was the equivalent of a Iron Age refrigerator used for storing smoked or salted meats.

And during the early Iron Age, the site at Jarlshof was surrounded by crops of barley and emmer, a kind of wheat.

Given the attire, that’s probably a private residence.

“The Brown Recluse” — that would be an excellent pub name, really. :’)

Ancient or modern, these places always look different on the way in than they do on the way out.

“Must be a Guinness and he’s waiting for the foam to go down.”

Should have ordered Olde Frothingslosh!

It’s called the cascade. I send the glass back if the bar tender lets it be served before the cascade is done.

don’t know if they have any flights though I have never seen references to any (and I have read a good bit on the islands), I was certainly planning ferry to take the car I would have already to be in the north of the country.

Ferry is the only way to the hebrides or orkney, and pretty sure it is the only way to the faroe islands.

reasonably urban areas - nearly 3 quid. islands - more, up to mid-3’s.

very notable inflation there even over the past 2 years.

That makes sense, not a lot of room to spare for runways.

The Royal Navy left Portsmouth for Scapa Flow in the Orkneys as a less vulnerable and better situated base. It is a vast anchorage and its small inlets are quite defensible. It served well in WWI and WWII, although not without attack. But given the technological changes and alliance systems after WWII it made sense to close it and move the home base back to Portsmouth.

Today there is a museum and an oil terminal for North Sea oil has been built.
