Okay, we all know Hurricane Irene was hyped to the gills.

WHY?

Was it slow news? Was it media infatuation with Obama at the helm of FEMA?

would be to move headquarters the heck out of New York City. I'd leave a bureau in Washington because the government is based there, but I'd have bureaus spread all over--Houston, Chicago, Denver, Albuquerque.

You just described CNN in the '80s.

A significant portion of the media is on the east coast. First the hype, then comes the self congratulation.

Hard to garner much sympathy from me for folks who choose to invest money to build a house on a sandbar.

First of all, the media in Florida ALWAYS hypes up hurricanes. So this wall to wall Hurricane coverage was no stranger to me. What was different was the nationalization of the story. I suspect that has to do with the fact that it was DC and NY in its path.

Politics didnt have to have anything to do with it, its just the media looking for a story. I've seen this before, and I know I'll see it again.

we both live in CT. I am unscathed, but many of my friends in Westport, Fairfield, Bethel and Bristol are not. Others have been told they won’t have power for a week.

Many homes were lost on the coast and downtown Bristol was a river today out of nowhere. People died.

Your endless need for conspiracy is so tiresome. A hurricane was headed potentially for DC, Philly, NYC, Providence, Hartford, Boston. A Lot of people live in these areas. a LOT.

btw, Brattleboro, VT was pretty much destroyed by flooding. Ask them about “hype.”

It wasn't quite a non event. 15 people died, and there was enough tree/road/light damage to make tomorrows commute rough.

As another FReeper pointed out, Irene probably saved more lives than she took by keeping people inside on a summer weekend. NBC reported that on an average Saturday night, NYPD makes over 400 arrests. Last night there were 34.

“opinions welcome”

It kicked the crap out of us here in the Catskill region. I think many will eat their words tomorrow when the film footage gets out.

Gilboa Dam is ready to burst, which will flood many small towns. Schoharie creek is flooding. We are unable to get more than a mile from our place due to flooded out roads. Every creek is out of it’s banks. Trees are down everywhere and the wind is still blowing hard with gusts around 40-50 mph. The ground is saturated and trees are uprooting as I type this. I just heard another one go down back in our woods. I’ll be checking for damage tomorrow and most likely will be behind a chain saw for at least a week.

The storm turned inland and we got hit much harder than you are hearing about. NYC got lucky.

Overhyped....I don’t think so.

From an email I just received from a friend that lives 45 minutes south of us:

“We got blitzed here by Irene, I am running a generator so I have some power, but trees are down everywhere and the villages of Potter Hollow, Oak Hill and Durham have been evacuated. I measured 14 inches of rain so far and my garden washed away.”.....

“...my road is washed out and I cannot go anywhere. The NY State thruway is closed. Houses have washed away and people are missing and presumed dead.”

A 24 hour news cycle with nothing else to talk about. Plus they thought it was going to be a big deal. I’m sure that they’re just as disappointed that the hurricane left anything standing as you are.

Bingo! The media will hype what they think will get people to tune in. (It's that simple, but some people prefer to see a conspiracy.)

Before the 24 hour news cycle and the internet, it would have been a big east coast news story, with brief mentions in other parts of the country on the nightly news.

Have been watching videos and as you say some places are definately getting hit hard...very hard. Roads completely gone....water half way up their buildings....and debrei all over.

I sometimes think people expected “tornado” winds and damage, which is a horse of a different color altogether.

Best to you and your community as you get your feet back on solid ground in the weeks ahead. May God guide everyones next stepes til you are on the other side of this.

The weather channel is in bed with Al Gore on the global warming scam as is of course the entirety of the MSM. Their story is that global warming will create bigger, badder and more frequent hurricanes. Hurricanes have been few for several years with none touching main land USA. Ergo they hype the hell out of what they have and make a mountain out of Irene, a really nonviolent storm as hurricanes go.

That's all.

WHY WAS THE STORM HYPED SO MUCH?

It looked like it could have impacted important people instead of southern, redneck hicks... (see also "Katrina")

Tell that to the people who will be without power for up to a week or more.

I am very sorry about this.

I quit paying attention to the storm when I saw that fool in sewage-laden sea foam. I am also far away from it, and so I knew my own would not be in danger from it. I do have a good buddy in VA I haven’t heard from, though, but he knows what he’s doing. Blue water, all the way.

been there, done that, lived through David, Frederick, storms in Hawaii that shut down power, typhoons in the pacific, storms in the north atlantic while at sea...

Good Gracious, winter storms do more damage and we all expect it in New England

I think the CAT I hurricane, the arthquake was a rare event, and it was not a small quake, either, especially for the east coast, a 5.8 is unheard of in memory for us, it would be like a hurricane hitting LA...excuse me, TYPHOON hitting LA, CAT I or not, LA dont get typhoons

but if it did, even a CAT I or just under would be huge news
