Heard “Highway Star” yesterday. Sounded as fresh as ever.

According to the conventions I follow, Modern music started in the early 20th century. Schoenberg, Stravinsky, guys like that.

For you it’s today’s rock. Whatever.

And Gaga’s one of the better artists out there today. Heaven help us.

Good music is everywhere today if you do just a bit of hunting and don’t just absorb what TV and radio are handing you. Lazy people deserve what they get.

No melody. All there is is beat... WAY better in the 70’s and 80’s... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyy_GhA9S9k

You forgot Pink Floyd. How could you? Apologize and I may forgive you.

Try Alt Nation on XM. It has occurred to me how closely these songs resemble the sixties AM rock station fare. Of course they are different, but they follow the same format. In particular, they all have a "hook", and of course a strong beat and melody.

Exhibit A is Around My Head by Cage the Elephant. That "Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ah Ah Ah Ah Ooh Ooh Ooh Ooh Ah Ah Ah Ah" is the epitome of a hook. It makes me feel right at home.

As far as metal goes, there’s great new stuff coming out, but it’s mostly the power and progressive bands.

Aquaria from Brazil and Pagan’s Mind from Norway are great examples of mixing both of those styles; Aquaria a little more biased towards power and Pagan’s Mind towards prog.

There’s stuff that’s been out for a while like Arena, Ten, and an all-star power/heavy metal project Avantasia, which brings together some fantastic singers, including Alice Cooper and Jon Oliva of Savatage on one song each, in different albums.

Jorn Lande is a really good singer as well, and has been involved with Avantasia for a couple of years, as well as projects of his own.

As a fan of Led Zeppelin I wouldn’t put “Stairway to Heaven” even in my top 5 favorites. Possibly not even in my top 10. Just sayin’.......

I’m 38. 80s music sucked bad. I will take many of todays bands over the 80s and many from the earlier classical era as well. Of course there were the greats but a lot of the music from the 60s and 70s was near identical. Using lady gaga as a reference for todays music and comparing her to van halen in the 80s is not an apt comparison. As I recall the top 40 stations were playing a lot of madonna. Try some different radio stations.

Wow! I read the thread and thought I’d stumbled into a dimension beyond FR.

Isn’t there anyone here, other than me, that recalls all of the great music and songs from the 1950s and early 1960s?

R&B, Doo-Wop, Mo-Town, R&R? Great songs that bring back memories.

I’ve always liked Led Z and ZZ Top since they arrived on the scene, too. Willie, Bonnie Raitt, Rondstadt, etc., were also tops.

Guess I’m just gettin’ old, since I turned 69 on the 22nd, but I can’t tolerate the so-called popular music of the past couple of decades.

>>> Modern music sucks

It was inevitable. Most authorities agree that modern music reached it's highest peak and ultimate expression with the Go-Go's. After that there was no where to go but down.

Modern music has sucked for every generation that has to listen to the trash the next generation comes up with.

I am of the opinion that the younger generation just wants to stick it to the preceding generation and music is one way to do so without getting punished for same.

I find listening to the classics, Mozart, Radesky, Shubert most relaxing unless I am stressed then it is hard rock.

To each his own and just to tune out the noise of the preceding generation.

Rockerwolf,
a few examples: Rival Sons, The Answer, Voodoo Highway. Look for them on the dreaded youtube. You won’t regret it. The good music is out there, but must be sought.

IMO, a lot of 60s 70s and 80s also sucked.

In case you’re ready to flame me I might just qualify my opinion by saying I’ve been a rock and roll musician for over 30 years and made a lot of money in the industry. I just grew up and grew out of it. Although I’m still involved playing classic rock it’s not my music of choice. Not by a long shot.

Lots of modern stuff is still very worthy. You can’t judge everyone in modern music by Lady Gaga you know?

Just switch to smooth jazz and enjoy the sweet ride.

I switched to Country Music - America’s music. The writing, talent and arrangements are far better than anything else out there save a few modern Rock bands like Nickelback.

Compared to modern music which seems to be mostly about image over whether they can play. I'll take "Stairway to Heaven" over Lady Gaga any day.

There's a HUGE AMOUNT of great music out there in all sorts of genres. And the engineering is far, FAR better now than almost anything produced in the 60's and 70's. But if you're waiting to hear it on a commercial radio station, you'll be waiting in vain. Stop being a sponge and waiting for whatever the FM radio currents waft your way and start looking. Go to a used CD place and look for compilations produced by labels such as Putumayo and you'll hear a lot of really good music.
