Good morning gardeners. There is not much garden news to report from East Central Mississippi this morning. I am just trying to keep everything watered and alive and picking a couple of peppers and a zucchini every once in awhile.
If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.
I hope all your gardens are flourishing.
I stopped at Lowe’s after work and picked up a box. Wish me luck!
I love the County Fair.
As far as I know, you can keep mounding soil around potatoes until the frost takes them. I’ve heard of guys raising potatoes in beds made of tires, and had to stop stacking tires long before the spuds stopped growing. In theory, the deeper you mulch them, the more potatoes they will yield.
Keep ‘em watered...
Down Home is the only way to describe our 2 fairs where you see people or relatives you haven’t seen since last year...
Wondering what to do with a branch that broke off patio tomato plant. Probably has over 20 cherry tomatoes on the branch that are green. I stuck the branch back into the soil for moisture until I can figure out how to save the tomatoes long enough for them to ripen.
Any hope in this endeavor or should I do something else?
Tomato 'branches' will root. Pull off any leaves near the breakage and stick at least IF possible 4" of the branch in water. You might need to 'stake' the branch but try and get the exposed break into water ASAP.
Oh thanks so much for the answer.
I hated to have those little green tomatoes die off.
Just water? Not leave in pot of soil right?
I considered myself lucky to get my hands on a scarce ‘Purple Haze’ tomato plant. Naturally; I plant it, and a storm comes along several weeks later and that was the only plant out of 125 that had branches broken by the wind. I put both broken branches in vases of water, and let them root for a couple of weeks. I now have THREE very healthy Purple Haze plants.
Well, I will attempt to explain. Right now the 'branch' has received an extreme shock. The branch needs 'moisture' right away to stave off the 'dying' process and with the breakage immersed into water assures all newly exposed parts are covered. Most especially since the branch has already blossomed and fruit has begun to develop.
I have stuck new broken plants into wet soil and they survived but there were no blossoms/fruit on them. The weather was mild both day and night. I cannot promise the branch will survive, but in water one can observe the root process begin and IF they develop then the new plant can be placed into the soil.
Appreciate your help.
Thank you.
Whew you were a lucky one.
I bought this little patio tomato plant for 1.50 last ones at Walmart. I stuck in a pot I had and watered it and now have over 30 tomatoes coming along. One darn branch broke off with a lot of tiny tomatoes that want to be ripe. Invested little but darn love the results so far!
Going to try to save the branch so fruit will will ripen.
Here is a link that probably gives more explicit instructions... http://www.gardenguides.com/110297-save-sheared-branch-tomato-plant.html

Sorry, from the previous post, my computer is acting like it has more than one broken branch.
Thanks for the link!
I’ll try to save the little bugger.
You could have just come to Eureka for that kind of weather but of course you would have had to bring your job with you....
Great report! What Sunset zone are you in? Eureka Ca is zone 19...
Here in Eureka the B. Sprouts started forming in late fall and early winter but by then the Aphis, Mealy Bugs and slugs made the inedible...
Well, it does say “large amounts” are toxic. I have no idea what “large amounts” means. If Max is fine, don’t worry about it.
We may be coming to Eureka in a month. My wife wants to go camping and I will want to get out of the Redding heat if it’s still going on. We were in Trinidad last year and it was a great break from the heat.
Always fun and always learn something...like that everyone else had a rotten year for potatoes, not just us.
I dug about 10' of row today, and got a grand total of what came off a single plant last year. One more 12 foot row left, and if I had any sense (and no fear of Mrs AR), I'd just till'em under and forget it.
Off to a free hog roast tomorrow, followed by a moving picture show; then, refreshed, once more into the breach garden.
How's your skunk situation?
