One of the main components that you’ll want to have around the house (or apartment) during a SHTF situation is chlorine bleach. Not only can it be used for cleaning water (although boiling is hands down more effective and healthier) it is excellent for keeping things sanitary.
Unfortunately, the average shelf life of liquid bleach (being stored between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) is around 6 months. After that, bleach will lose 20% of it’s strength at around the year mark and then 20% each year after that. So if you’re not vigilant about keeping it rotated, chances are when you need it for disinfecting water or to keep things clean you’ll be fresh out of bleach and luck.

No really. The filters I use have an indefinite shelf life and a long life span, both the hand pumps and the RO models. I am trying never to rely on something that is difficult to get, keep, or use. Chlorine is one of those items.
oh, us old Girl Scout leaders use cotton balls and vaseline, but dipping them in wax to make them waterproof- EXCELLENT!
Go to a pool store in your area. I would suggest a BIOGUARD dealer. Bioguard tends to make the best quality pool chemicals. Buy their product called Burn Out 3 or Burn Out 35. It is about 98% Calcium Hypochloride. See link below.

In many homes even “cuss” is a word never to be used. Why do you use it here in public?
Don’t forget “trichlor” pool shock.
In the quantities I bought it in (to share with others when TSHTF), I could purify millions of gallons.
I think the ratio is 1/8th teaspoon per 50 gals for purification purposes.
This stuff is dangerous, though. Larger ratios will cause some explosive effects.

I get the impression that is not an honest post, unless of course you are agreeing with me to stop some of the greater vulgarity, like reading this article to your church group, or a scouting group and using SHTF.

It is what I use to start my woodstove. They work great. No newspaper , just a little kindling and larger pieces on top.
You do understand that the say the four pounds of Calcium Hypochlorite I have stored in one coffee can will make 256 gallons of cleaning solution?
I figured I’d put about a tablespoon or so of lint into each egg pocket, put the whole mess into molten wax until it absorbs it, put it on aluminum foil to let it cool, then break em apart and bag them.

No really; I’ve have never see listed any filtering system that does not have a gallon usage listed. even a Berkey recommends 3000 gallons per filter and my Katadyn Hiker has a 200 gallon reconmendation.
Three capfulls to a gallon of water is awfully strong for drinking purposes. I think I saw that same episode of Dual Survivor and I’m pretty sure they used 8 drops to the gallon just as this article recommends.
I’ve found some online sources as well. However I prefer to filter the water and not just treat it chemically. The Berky water filters work great and last a long time.
How do you work one of those new fangled things ?

According to one site Biogard had Lithium Hypochlorite and not calcium.

I buy 50% hydrogen peroxide and use that for sanitizing. And it is much safer for consumption when added to water for purification.
SSKI, saturated solution potassium iodide is also much safer than chlorine bleach.
Vaseline cottonballs burn great even if wet. Another great one is a small piece of cardboard. You remove one side of the paper, dip it in melted candle wax and roll it up. Burns great and is an excellent firestarter. During my recent trip to the woods they worked better then the commercial fuel tabs.

There are some that are like a Styrofoam product. but I shun them.
Always hated to throw stuff away, so if I can figure a good use for something, I go for it.
