In Sept. 2008, Roger Fisher said that he was happy to receive the publicity for the song "Barracuda", co-written with the Wilson sisters from Heart, which was being used by the McCain/Palin campaign.
The Wilson sisters said that "Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women."
Roger told Reuters back then that he pledged to give part of the royalties from the song's use by McCain/Palin campaign to Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's campaign.
I wonder if he and the Wilson sisters feel the same way about Barack Obama these days...
Canadian Rockers? I thought they hailed from Seattle.
From what I recall in their “Behind The Music” show about a decade ago, they traveled everywhere as kids because their dad was in the US Army.
Well, his riffs on Barracuda were like listening to the album. His longtime girlfriend was there and during a break I told her I was surprised to see her there because “band wives/girlfriends” lose interest. She said something along the lines of “he doesn’t do this much any more”.
Regarding his general playing, it fits in with my attitude about pop music in general, which is about “luck”.
Heck, I’m just finishing Clapton’s autobiography and one thing is very clear: If he had been born 20 years later he would not have amounted to much. That was a rare and singular time in music history (60’s) for a guitar player to get famous solely on playing ability. And for every “star” there are thousands of more talented musicians that just didn’t get the breaks.
A good example would be Doyle Bramhall II. He’s just trying to make ends meet. Yet he is mentioned several times in Clapton’s book and plays on the Roger Waters DVD recorded at Portland. He’s amazing, but he was born too late to make real money at it.
Sept 2008
In a statement posted on the EW.com site, the Wilsons wrote:
“Sarah Palin’s views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song ‘Barracuda’ no longer be used to promote her image. The song ‘Barracuda’ was written in the late ‘70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The ‘barracuda’ represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there’s irony in Republican strategists’ choice to make use of it there.”
Paris Hilton made an unofficial endorsement of Governor Palin.
Heart sucks, period. They always have, they always will. The only reason anybody ever paid any attention to them was because (at one time) one of the chicks was semi-decent looking. They never expressed an original musical idea, and they're technically not that good.
If they were a guy band, they'd have been forgotten decades ago.
I thought they were Canucks.
ansel12: ‘’Paris Hilton made an unofficial endorsement of Governor Palin.’’
Oh. My. I stand corrected (and flabbergasted).
Thanks for the info.
I finally heard Rush Limbaugh’s explanation of why he used the Pretenders’ “My City Was Gone”. My flabber was gasted then also.
Peet
P.S. Long story short: Hind is a barking moonbat who HATES Limbaugh, but her parents adore him, so...
Oh, probably women who like other women. Hitlery would be their natural choice, I think.
Yeah, Paris speaking out for Palin in 2008 showed some independence and courage, that wasn’t an easy thing to put out there in her little celebrity world.
They aren’t Canadian, they left Seattle for Vancouver to avoid the draft.
Technically, Canucks ARE Americans, as are Mexicans, Brazilians, etc. All part of North/South America. The USA just grabbed the nickname, comes off the tongue more easily than “United Stateser.”
“United Stateser”
Exactly. At times I’ve heard people say that they’re “North American” to imply that they’re from the U.S. — but Mexico and Canada are also in North America.
She obviously loves the money she gets from Rush using her song.
“...they left Seattle for Vancouver to avoid the draft.”
Sisters never had to worry about being drafted. Tho I think in these days of equality and all that, if the draft is restored, in the name of fairness women should equally face the draft men had to deal with.
I meant the guys in the band fled, and their girlfriends at the time (Ann and Nancy) went with them.
“She obviously loves the money she gets from Rush using her song.”
Actually, not. She exercised her copyrights about 10 years ago and Rush had to stop using it as his theme song. He explained to his audience which included her dad. Things turned around quickly after that. At least we have to give her credit for respecting her parents ;)
Yeah, but ya gotta love the idea of women/gays being equally subject to a potentially reinstated draft, after all the fighting they did for their ‘rights’ to be equal to straight guys. Fairness can be such a b!tch.
Are they still happy with him? That probably depends on the melanin content of thier collective epidermis.
No, they’re American. They have their own space at EMP in Seattle (Experience Music Project funded by Paul Allen). For what it’s worth, I love Heart. Have seen them in concert many times. Nancy Wilson was one of the biggest reasons I started playing guitar, other than the fact that I always wanted to play SOMETHING. Remember seeing her on TV when I was about 12 and said YEP! That’s what I want to do, and have been doing it for over 30 years now.
Last I heard, Chrissie Hynde told Rush Limbaugh that if he made a sizable to PETA, that she’d allow him to play the song. He did donate.
