Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny made a speech condemning the Holy See in which he said that the 'rape and torture of children were downplayed or managed, to uphold instead the primacy of the institution, its power, standing and reputation.'
He furiously denounced what he called 'the dysfunction, disconnection, elitism - and the narcissism - that dominate the culture of the Vatican to this day.'

Confession and repentance are powerful spiritual tools. I hope the church is able to confess and repent rather than defend and deny.
Has the Irish PM condemned the Mohammadan Death Cultists ?
It’s a sad day for Ireland if the Prime Minister thinks this will get him more votes.
Evidently this is easier than dealing with Ireland’s economic problems.
Tragic when I see people only pretend to give a sh*8 when it’s faggot priests involved.
I really can’t imagine why pedophile priests weren’t 1) excommunicated (or whatever it is you do to priests who violate their vows) & 2) turned over to the law for prosecution. It is an outrage things were handled so badly. But then no one in charge of anything these days seems to have one iota of common sense.
You didn’t want to push some hot buttons did you :-)
The de facto historical modus operandi of the Rome-headed church has been to “work from within” rather than risk ostracizing any local congregation (or organization) that grew at some point from that church and which now identifies itself as Catholic, no matter how bad its behavior has gotten.
Whether this preserve-until-they-choose-to-split practice is good or bad for eternal souls I can’t speculate. But IMHO it’s led to a lot of unnecessary misery on earth for people who didn’t do anything to deserve it, and unnecessary bad-mouthing of Jesus Christ.
So, your excuses for child molesters are “The Muslims are worse!” and “We have bigger problems”.
Nice.
So the Prime Minister should wait for a situation where it gets him fewer votes and where the Irish economy is better before speaking up about allegations of institutional sexual abuse?
I think the word you’re looking for is Defrocked.
The “Vatican” did not cover up anything. The people who either covered up or ignored it were the Irish bishops, 3 of whom have already been removed by the Pope.
The removal of a bishop is a very serious thing and rarely happens in the Church. They are all considered successors to the Apostles, and until the Vatican’s records were destroyed (16th century, IIRC), every bishop could trace his lineage back to one of the Apostles. I have seen somewhat incomplete episcopal “genealogical charts” in Spain, although after Vaatican II, nobody seems to care much.
And in the 21st century, I’d bet that few if any people would know that Catholic bishops are the successors to the Apostles, and that they are all supposed to be able to trace their lineage back to the Apostle from whom they are descended.
St Patrick, the son of a Christian Roman-British authority and a Christian native woman (either in Northern England or what is now Scotland), was made Archbishop of Ireland by the Pope in the 5th century, since the first bishop of a territory is named as its archbishop. St. Patrick is probably weeping right now to see these hideous Irish bishops.
This is going to be weird later this year if that leftist candidate wins who think pedophilia and incest is just fine.
So have they been kicked out of the clergy, or just moved somewhere else? Outside of Irish jurisdiction maybe? Just wondering.
The problem is homos have a predilection to young butts, to adolescent boys.
I take it that would be a “no.”
Was there a question?
More Irish maybe becoming Protestant? Interesting.
Is this about the law where they want priests to break the confession seal?
The answer is likely a resounding no, and it certainly does matter. It is very de rigueur amongst the left to bash the church. The irony and rank hypocrisy of these same pols is their championing of decadent values and indeed pushing mainstreaming of homosexual behavior are the very values and actions that have led to these problems within the Catholic church. There isn’t a single FReeper here who excuses child molestors, it is the hypocrisy of these certain politicians that should be questioned and their deafening silence on the root causes, nevermind their added silence on other monstrosities that are either at their doorstep or well within their house.
That may be true, but it still doesn't change whether what he says is true. In any case neither of us knows anything about him, so it's not only a logical fallicy to attack the man instead of the argument, but in this case you don't even know if the attack is true.
Moreover you can't blame people in Ireland for being more concerned about child molesters in the Catholic Church than the sins of Islam. Their kids overwhelmingly go to Catholic Church, not Mosques.
I am truly not anti-Catholic, but there seems to still be a corruption at high levels that tolerates this stuff, and it hasn't been completely dealt with yet. My sincere hope is that it will be, because it is a stain on an institution that many good people have faith in.
