Neighbors: Dog was shot, killed by deputy [Black Labrador]

DAYTON, TX (KTRK) -- Residents in a Dayton neighborhood say they are still in shock after hearing that someone shot and killed a dog that was loved by nearly everyone.

The incident is a real blow to residents. Fred -- a four-year-old black Labrador -- had a family, but it seems everyone in this close-knit community loved him.

Hope Havard was Fred's owner, but he wasn't just her pet. Fred was known to roam the streets of the neighborhood, and Havard said her neighbors treated him like a member of their own families, too.

"He was a really good dog. He liked playing fetch a lot," Havard said. "Everybody loved him and, like, everybody knew him and he knew that he was going to protect everybody."

Last Thursday, the unthinkable happened.

>>>Something is wrong when all these police are shooting peoples pets.

True, but the likelihood of this kind of shooting goes way down when a pet is managed by it’s owner and not allowed to freely roam - even if it was beloved by everyone.

By the way, it doesn’t seem that Texas has leash laws, if this is correct.

I’m just wondering when a pet owner flips out and shoots the cop. The pet owner could claim he felt his life in danger from an out of control cop.

Actually probably true, but we both know how that would end.

I believe that’s the link you were looking for; no doubt, if you have any real interest in the link you posted, then you will find it worthy enough to be deserving of its own thread.

My wife’s boss had his Dad pass away earlier this year. After the funeral we went to the house. As we arrived, their old black lab was laying in the grass in front of the house, just as Secret Service people were helping George H. W. Bush into the house. Naturally we said hello to the dog, who later blocked the hallway and wouldn’t let anyone pass without at least a pat or a scratch on the head. I can not imagine a friendlier breed.

While the owner ought to have kept his dog secured on his property, the cop overreacted.

Not just in shooting the dog but also, if information in the comments section is correct, in pointing his weapon at a person who questioned his actions.

My link is dog/cop related and could only be opposed by a person who searches “Police shoot dog” Cop Hater.

You just reminded me why I like Labradors better than I like most LEO’s. Nice gentle dogs and as loyal as hell.

This cop is very lucky. He was off duty, so not in uniform. In Texas, you can use deadly force to protect your property. If the owner had been armed and saw someone shoot his dog, he would have been completely justified in shooting that person, since he had no way of knowing that the person was a cop. And good luck getting a grand jury to indict...

Yep. Sooner or later, a fire-arm owning dog-owner *is* going to see one of these crimes in action and respond accordingly.

Well I’m just waiting for the story to happen where the homeowner shot back at a cop. There was one story here where a dog was chained up and a cop shot if from thirty feet away. I guess the cop thought the dog would unhook itself and charge. The more I read about cops doing stuff like this the more I don’t want anything to do with them. As it was pointed out - pizza is delivered faster than a cop to your door. I’m just saying that one day ....

Yes, we already established that you don’t believe your link threadworthy; it’s quite clear that you can’t defend the actions of this cop, and so you are further embarrassing yourself by attempting to change the subject.

Keep it up!

However, the non-cop neighbors all testifying that this was a gentle...

There is no way for someone passing through to know that. Some folks are just plain scared of dogs.

Still...if an "ordinary" citizen did what this cop did, they'd be in the slammer...immediately.

“Still...if an “ordinary” citizen did what this cop did, they’d be in the slammer...immediately. “

Yep.

People who are scared of dogs should not be police officers.

People who can’t remember Peelian Principles should not be police officers.

*****

1) The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.

2) The ability of the police to perform their duties is dependent upon the public approval of police actions.

3) Police must secure the willing co-operation of the public in voluntary observation of the law to be able to secure and maintain the respect of the public.

4) The degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to the necessity of the use of physical force.

5) Police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to public opinion, but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial service to the law.

6) Police use physical force to the extent necessary to secure observance of the law or to restore order only when the exercise of persuasion, advice, and warning is found to be insufficient.

7) Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent upon every citizen in the interests of community welfare and existence.

8) Police should always direct their action strictly towards their functions, and never appear to usurp the powers of the judiciary.

9) The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.

Aren’t you wasting time from searching another “Police shoot dog” Drive-by Media hit to sucker people into hating cops?

All one has to do is read some of the posts in this thread to see the hatred you stoke-up against the police.

That makes you feel like a big man?

As far as this item goes, there was an investigation and the man was cleared. But of course a Cop Hater like you won’t care about a small detail like that.
