DAYTON, TX (KTRK) -- Residents in a Dayton neighborhood say they are still in shock after hearing that someone shot and killed a dog that was loved by nearly everyone.
The incident is a real blow to residents. Fred -- a four-year-old black Labrador -- had a family, but it seems everyone in this close-knit community loved him.
Hope Havard was Fred's owner, but he wasn't just her pet. Fred was known to roam the streets of the neighborhood, and Havard said her neighbors treated him like a member of their own families, too.
"He was a really good dog. He liked playing fetch a lot," Havard said. "Everybody loved him and, like, everybody knew him and he knew that he was going to protect everybody."
Last Thursday, the unthinkable happened.

According to the comments section, the cop then pointed his weapon at a person who questioned his action.
...cops
Another small town cop with an itchy trigger finger.
America’s “Law Enforcement.” Beating & killing citizens every day....and our dogs!
Something is wrong when all these police are shooting peoples pets.
We used to have a chubby old black Lab that roamed the neighborhood. Kids said his name was Hi (or High). He’d zig-zag up and down the street and visit with whoever was out and about. He’d say hello and sit on the porch for a little while, then meander down the street to greet someone else. I can picture him “nipping” at someone on a bike, just because he would be so glad to be a part of it. Absolutely no danger to anyone unless tou consider a nose rub or a lick as a danger.
Why am I not shocked?
Why would a deputy JBT make up such a story without making sure he applied proper looking bite marks on his shoes?
“Dayton is a city in Liberty County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,709 at the 2000 census.”
****
Looks like a small town. Perhaps some unemployed soul there would be more than happy to take the trigger-happy cop’s job.
He was a big old yellow lab, that all the kids called Yeller.
He was one of the most gentle dogs I ever knew.
Unfortunately, they were an elderly couple, and moved to one of those retirement communities.
I found out later that, they were not permitted to have dogs there, so they had him put down.
It still makes me heart sick to think of it.
I had a liver-color lab. Sweetest dog I’ve ever known. Smart, too.
No charges have been filed and Liberty County Sheriff's Office investigators said marks on the officer's shoes seem to match up with his story.
Pure friggin BS!
Talk about hyperbole. They're lucky the cop didn't kill any of the family which happens all too often. They should count the loss of a dog as a lesson in who's in charge and learn to respect authority. I'm sure the dog made a "threatening gesture."
Charges are not being files.
I wonder what would have happened to a non-cop who did the same thing.
A cop was killed in a car wreck a few years back near where I live. Wasn’t chasing anyone. Just driving like an idiot.
A few days later I was driving down the road when a “convoy” of cops, mostly constables, approached. They were coming back from the funeral escorting a limo. I assume they were escorting the family back home. There was no hearse. (And by the way, there is no law in Texas that says you have to pull over for a funeral.)
The first cop in the convoy whipped over right in front of me and we almost had a head on collision. He then pulled up to my door and shouted to me to pull over and “don’t move that effing car” or he’ll arrest me. He used all kinds of profanities. I knew if I objected I’d be arrested by another fat uneducated cop. I hope the worst for this ..... p.o.s.
In Texas companies hire off duty cops to stop traffic and allow their employees to leave work. One day my wife and I watched an old lady inch forward. This cop screamed at this frightened woman using all kinds of profanities. I followed her home and told her we’d be witnesses if she wanted to file a complaint. She was still shaking and said she just wanted to go inside.
I called the J.P. offices in that area and the Sgt. denied that this guy worked for him. Lying p.o.s. Thin blue line....or actually FAT blue line.
If they’ll shoot a dog for no reason they’ll shoot a human for no reason. And they’re all looking for an excuse to use their tazer.
Finally, I was a cop for a short period so I know how they operate. That’s why I quit. I didn’t want to go around beating people for “not respecting” me.
You gonna call us, suckah? You a civilian..!
Chief of Police Roland Lee (Pete) Douzat
That depends on whether there are local and/or state leash laws in force.
If there are, then the owner could be fined for letting his dog run loose.
However, the non-cop neighbors all testifying that this was a gentle, loving dog doesn’t bode well for the cop.
My best friend in the world was an old mangy black lab mut that lived on my bother in law’s farm. One of those “I showed up, and I think I’ll stay” kinda guys.
I can imagine his greetings being mistaken too. But only if you were of a mind to shoot first and ask questions later.
Tux’s greatest threat was to give you carpal tunnel from forcing you to pet on him so much.
I still miss that clown. We had some good times...
