Weve seen a lot of advancements in automotive design and technology in the past 14 years, so whats to come in the next 14 years? Weve all heard of autonomous cars in the making, and weve seen the evolution of hybrids, electrics, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and advanced safety features that are capable of stopping a vehicle in its tracks.
Imajerk17 asks us to look into the future to 2025, and debate what things automotive will be phased out in the cars of the future. He thinks steering wheels will be phased out and may possibly be replaced with a joystick, and with the development of aluminum and carbon-fiber-bodied cars, will steel-bodied cars make it to see 2025? Other forum posters are scared manual transmissions will a long-lost memory. What do you think? What things automotive will likely be gone by 2025? Would you go as far to say that human drivers will no longer be needed?

No problem.
I believe the term is “risk compensation.” If people feel more at risk, they behave more carefully; conversely, if they feel less at risk, they behave less carefully.
It says it in the owner's manual. ;)
If there was any honesty, you could stick a USB plug into any laptop and read all the details for yourself. The system is designed to force you to the dealer...
Most of that is already known and done. Traffic engineering is pretty much settled.
So I’m not sure what you are asking for?
I drove 2500k Miles once.
What is this “cruise” button you speak of?
I actually had a friend in 68 that had one in his Canary Yellow, jacked up Pontiac Passing-for-a-GTO next model down (Bonneville?)....it actually was a 45 RPM mobile record player! what a trip...He was from Jersey and serious about his car and the look (spent hours washing it before a date)....
Where I live up here in North Georgia, these CMFer’s never heard of a “turn signal”....and I was born here...
I very rarely use the cruise control - even on long empty stretches of road. I like the feel of the road and the pedal, etc.
My wife OTOH will keep the cruise control on until the last 10 feet (or so it seems!) to the car in front of her - THEN she’ll tap on the brakes.
So sorry about your daughter, but we are definitely not there for automated cars.
Today computers, GPS and mobile phones are so small it would take a little programming to set up the auto drive network.
Boeing has autolanded aircraft wuing GPS. the Navy is landing jet fighters on aircraft carriers using GPS. the problem is solvable.
The only problem is the climate change ramifications of this system. With 30,000 less deaths per year due to highway accidents there would be more CO2 for Al Gore to deal with!(sarc off)
Ahh, ok I misunderstood.
Fixed platform would probably be doable but at enormous cost, for little benefit.
Question of freedom vs the costs of freedom.
About the time cars began being imported en masse. Sadly the affliction has infected most manufacturers.
Me too.
You nailed it.
