Ignoring laws is a San Francisco value.

Saw the headline and immediately knew we’re talking San Fran here.

I see bicyclists do this all the time, roll through a stop sign or light when it is “clear”. They do what they want, but then complain about laws when one gets hit by a car.

I am truly sorry for the woman AND whoever hit her; and hope for her recovery.

That said I don’t think one bicyclist in 100 stops at stop signs or stops for red lights in San Francisco.

They are insane with attitude and seem to think that the more obnoxious they are, the safer they are.

Just yesterday I had my truck pulled up on a PORTION of the sidewalk to unload some heavy building materials. Plenty of right of way left. A bicyclist whizzed by on his bike, yelling, “Get out of the way!” at me.

He of course was speeding down the sidewalk on his bike, which is illegal.

They pound your car with their fists, they whizz by on the right when you are signaling for a right hand turn, on and on, I am amazed at the numbers still surviving. Aggressive and obnoxious and frankly stupid.

My favorites are the illegal Mexicans that ride their bikes on the wrong side of the road, on the sidewalk while ignoring all traffic laws. Must be a Mexican tradition.

I got a ticket once for running a red light on a bicycle. I was crossing a T-intersection, along the top of the T, so actually not really crossing any lanes of traffic, and there was no traffic anyway, except for the cop car behind me (which I failed to see). I don’t think I did anything unsafe but I did break the law so I just paid the ticket and learned my lesson. The law is the law.

>> The woman, whose name was not released, suffered a life-threatening head injury

Well then, we know it isn’t Pelosi. No head injury on San Fran Nan could be obvious, let alone life threatening.

Most of the comments on here are about the idiotic situations in SanFran, but understand that Agenda21 folks are pushing bicycle lanes and right-of-ways ALL OVER AMERICA! They are usually pushing AGAINST the will of the people in those cities (just happened in Arlington, TX)!

I can foresee when the laws will mandate that bicycles have the primary right-of-way on thoroughfares throughout America - IF AGENDA21 CONTINUES ON ITS CURRENT COURSE!

So, bicyclists in SF are basically the same as those in NYC.

Most are a menace, running lights, going the wrong way on one way streets, weaving in and out of traffic, riding on the sidewalk, riding the wrong direction in a one way bike lane, etc.

I frequently ride a bicycle recreationally, mostly on trails, but sometimes on (suburban) roads, and I love the IDEA of cycling. But, the idiotic behavior of the majority of NYC cyclists almost makes me want them banned from Manhattan.

Ban cyclists. If it will save just one life, isn’t it worth it?

It’s the womans fault she should have been looking. Everyone who ever drove in a city and saw a bicyclist knows that there are no laws for them. Semi-sarcasm.

Were I in that situation, and carrying something semi-disposable, like a bag of groceries or Home Depot items, I might have a clumsy moment and drop it right in his travel path as I dodged out of the way.

“Ooops, sorry for your crash, you startled me and I dropped my bag!”

I’ve always partial to a cane when walking in a big city. It comes in handy in a variety of situations. I like the ones that work well on skulls and spokes.

I wouldn’t have a problem with bike paths if they used them. You always see the Lance Armstrong wannabe spandex mafia on the roads with an empty bike path next to them. What drives me nuts is when you finally do get past them, they just go right around you at the red light and you have to be stuck behind them at 10mph again.

Was the pedestrian wearing her CALDOT approved walking helmet?

Could easily happen in NYC too. I'm always ready to push cyclists who ignore traffic laws into oncoming traffic. (And at one time I was one of those guys riding a bike around Manhattan - but never disobeying traffic laws.)

Pretty good idea, even if you have a pocket folder and a pistol on you, as I typically do, at least in my home state and most adjacent ones. I’m still a little young and spry of step such that pulling it off would be a stretch, but it’s not too many years off where that might not be the case.
